Irena sniffled a sigh as she watched as the lightning flashed in the dark gray sky, it alighted up her face briefly before it disappeared. Thunder rumbled somewhere in the dark skies and outside. Irena sat on her window-seat, it was two stairs down from the attic and spare rooms that she or sisters don't want to make of it.
She lives with two older sisters, one was a few months older than her and her other sister is sixteen years old but she's tall as Irena. Irena put her hand on the window and the glass shook under her hand from the heavy peals of thunder cracked overhead.
All day the radio had been reporting on the unexpected violent storms ragged up and down the East Coast of Florida, the storm was at its worst. Sitting alone with her weary sisters in the same bedroom and her older brother known as Benedict Richard Williams who is a CRU agent at the Central Research Unit.
Irena never imagined a storm this bad and she had been in the outskirts of a hurricane, so was her siblings and her family.
Irena yawned and she stretched, clearly bored from watching the Florida thunderstorm, she already had seen more than enough thunderstorms from her time living in Florida.
Irena let out a small scream when she heard the loudest rumble of thunder that she had ever heard and she accidentally fell on the carpeted floor on her hip.
"Ow." said Irena, annoyed and shivered with fear.
"Are you alright sis?" said Cassie as she looked up at from her book.
Cassie was reading from the light of a flashlight, she's also fifteen years old but she was born in July and Irena was born in November. They both were born on the same years, but their parents are unknown and they cared by their older siblings.
"Yeah, just got a little startled." said Irena as she rubbed her sore back.
Cassie smiled sympathetically and her brown eyes softened with soft amusement. Irena just sighed and she glanced at the window-seat as she got up. Nearby Marina was looking through her I-pad on the bed and she smiled Irena.
"Are you checking on the Weather App again?" asked Irena to Marina.
"Yup, this storm is off the charts." said Marina with a brief shake of her head.
"Yikes, this storm is probably bad as a . . ." started Cassie but Irena and Marina cut her off. "Don't say it!"
They think the word "hurricane" is mostly cursed because every time they say "probably bad as" it will happen next week or next month.
Suddenly there was an ever-louder peal of thunder and brilliant flash of lightning, the three girls got on to the window-seat. The lightning struck a electric pole so hard, the antenna at the top of the building exploded in a flash of electrical sparks and flying debris. Irena could hardly believe what they had just witnessed. Irena watched as all the lights in the country neighborhood blinked out. Immediately after, the lights in the houses and buildings around it went out. The darkness spread like a grape-juice stain on the carpet, as the neighborhood was hit with a blackout. Irena watched as the street and traffic lights went out. It wasn't long before the power reached their home, plunging their house into darkness. Irena leaned farther against the glass and tried to see where the blackout ended. It didn't. The neighborhood was in darkness.
"That's just great." said Irena grumpily.
"I'll get the phones." said Marina.
Once Marina got their house phones they all jumped when their phones and the i-pad started ringing. They each grabbed their phones and got onto the i-pad. They saw it was Benedict Richard Williams, their older brother.
"Benedict!" cried out Marina when they saw his face. "You won't believe what just happened! The electric pole just blew up!"
"And it was the that does the whole neighborhood's electricity!" said Cassie.
"I heard," said Benedict anxiously. "Are you all right? Did it hit our home?"
"No, we're okay." said Irena calmly, she had been through these storms before. "I just checked on the stables, everything's still intact."
"Everything but the power. All we could see is the lightning and the blackout had spread out all over the city." said Cassie.
They heard another voice in the background, making them all flinched back with surprise. Benedict cursed before speaking to them again.
"We're getting reports that the blackout has spread to all the boroughs and all over the States. This is a huge storm. I've been told that the electric isn't going to be fixed anytime soon." said Benedict.
"We'll go to the bathroom and fill the bathtub. Since we don't know how long this is going to take, we'll fill all the buckets just in case." said Marina.
"Okay. But if you need me or anything, you can call me. Understand?" said Benedict hesitately.
"Will do." said Irena.
"Sure thing." said Cassie.
"Got it." said Marina.
The three of them ended their call and used their phones like flashlights. Irena started to fill the kitchen water into buckets that she collected from the garage and collected bottles of water. Cassie started to fill the bathroom sinks with buckets. Marina started to fill the bathtub and collected the water with pots and pans. They collected enough water just in time before the water pumps stopped working.
The girls managed to forget about the storm a few minutes. But with the water and electricity off, they can hear the rumbling thunder, splashing raindrops, police and fire engines somewhere in the neighborhood.
Just outside the kitchen window, Irena saw another burst of lightning and heard more thunder. The lightning was so bright it almost dazzled her eyes, even after she closed her eyes. There was no pause between the light and sound, it meant that that this strike was very close.
As the thunder rumbled angrily, Irena backed away from the window nervously and into the dark living room, which has no windows. The storm was directly overhead – and was getting worse by the minute.
