REBEKAH’S POV
Last year when Kyle’s sister,Lacey, got engaged and asked him to be the best man he was so excited until they told him it would take place in Greece, the place Lacey and her fiancé first met. The problem with Greece is that it’s the place where Kyle’s Mum died and where his Dad - who he has little to do with - currently lives. It’s his sister’s wedding and he’s the best man so I took it upon myself to convince him to go, I knew he wouldn’t listen to Joe because they’re guys but he might listen to me..
I was walking along the cold, white streets on my way home when I saw Kyle in “our pub” trying to chat up some under-aged girl. The quiet little pub is owned by Joe’s aunt but we run it for her mainly; we’re quite good at checking ID for under-aged drinking but it’s gone 9pm on a Thursday so that means Carl’s working and he lets anyone drink anything! I storm in the pub, take a look around to find two people sat in the corner having a chat, three local girls giggling over something on their iPhones,Carl playing darts with a friend of his,and at the opposite end of the pub Kyle propped against the bar way too close to the girl and handing her another drink. I stop for a second, gather my thoughts and control my breathing before heading for Carl first. “Really,Carl? What is she 14?” I practically spit out as soon as I reach the dart board area.
“Hey R! What’s up?” he slurs his words, proof that he’s been drinking on the job again.
“I’ve told you not to call me that! And you’ve had too many to drink. Anyway, the girl Kyle’s trying to take to bed, she’s way too young to be drinking, you can’t just serve her and let her get pissed without checking her ID.” he really irritates me sometimes,I feel like an old nag,but if we don’t obey rules this place could get shut down for good and none of us want that.
Receiving no response from Carl I give up and walk over to Kyle,he has his back turned to me and hasn’t realised I’m here. I rudely interrupt and take the bottle out of the girls hand, she’s about to argue when I tell her to go home. “Hey! What the fuck? You don’t normally ruin my fun.” Kyle complains,as I turn to face him.
“Yeah, well I will when it involves doing illegal things that could cost all of us our jobs.” Kyle,Carl,Joe,Joe’s cousin Lauren and me all do shifts here. Lauren tries to manage it when her mum is MIA but she’s been going through a rough time so I’ve been helping out more - I’m good at maths so I don’t mind the accounting side of it. “Anyway I came to talk to you.” I say, trying to get to the point as I would like to get home to Joe.
“Sorry. Carl served her though. What’s up?” we can argue like cat and dog,he can be an arse, but he knows how important our jobs are to all of us. None of us come from wealth except Kyle,we all grew up in average homes and had average lives,Kyle grew up with money from his Dad’s side but he doesn’t gloat about it,actually without him this place would have been closed down last month.
I lean over the bar and pull a bottle of water out of the cooler underneath, then sit on the stool in front of him. I’m not sure how to word this because I know it’s a sore subject for him, which is why he’s been in here getting drunk every night for the past two weeks.
“Look,Kyle,I really think you should go to Lacey’s wedding.. She wants you there, more than anyone else.” Lacey and Kyle were close before, but when Lacey met Dan she stayed in Greece with him. “Before you storm out or bite my head off,I know it’s hard for you. I know it’s where your Mum died and you haven’t been back since, and I know you don’t want to see your Dad but Lacey is more important than that and you know it.” I spot the pain on his face before he tries to hide it. “Tell Joe that next time he can talk to me himself!” he shouts. He’s about to storm off so I grab him by the arm and say “Joe didn’t send me,in fact he doesn’t know I’m here,he thinks I’m on the bus back from boxing.
“Look,I can’t make you go,but she’s your sister and it will be good for you. Please think about it and don’t shut yourself out.” I touch him gently on the shoulder before heading out.

“Hey! I’m home.” I say as I walk through our front door. Joe walks out of the kitchen to greet me,kisses me - we’ve lived together for nearly 2 years now,I’ll never get tired of coming home to him it’s the best feeling ever.
“I said I’d pick you up,you didn’t need to get the bus.” he says walking back into the kitchen. Guilt creeps in as I’m taking my shoes off and hanging my coat up. I walk in the kitchen and see the phone next to the menu from our favourite chinese restaurant. I can’t help but smile,he follows my gaze and says “I didn’t know how long you’d be and I didn’t want to cook.” we both chuckle.
I go upstairs to get changed,as I’m finishing putting my hair up in a bun I hear voices in the living room. I thought it might be the delivery guy,but as I’m walking downstairs I recognise that voice,I only heard it half an hour ago - Kyle. As I reach them they’ve only just said hello so chances are Kyle hasn’t had time to spill on the fact that I went to the pub first and in fact I didn’t get the bus home. It’s nothing major, and Joe won’t get mad at me,but any lie or mistold truth feels like betrayal on my part.
“Hey.” I say sitting on the sofa next to Joe. He automatically links his fingers in mine and I sit back. “What’s up man? You know you’re welcome anytime, but isn’t Thursday your big club night?” Joe’s right,he always goes to clubs on Thursday’s,according to him there’s more variety of women. Such a pig sometimes.
“Nah,not tonight. Now that you’re both here I want to talk to you about something. More like ask you guys a question.” Now I’m intrigued and slightly scared, you never know what he’s going to come out with. “Well, after much consideration I’ve decided to go to Lacey’s wedding, after all I am the best man! Thank you Rebekah for making me realise it’s not just about me.”
“You didn’t tell me you spoke to him about going?” damn it,Joe looks confused so I turn to face him and say “I didn’t get the bus home,I decided to walk and when I walked past the pub Kyle was there so I spoke to him about it. Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”
Joe squeezes my hand and nods,my reassurance that it’s okay and he doesn’t think of it as lying.
“After shouting at Carl and scaring that poor girl off!” Kyle laughs. To which I respond with a glare that says ‘you know why I did it’. “Anyway,I want to go and you both know why I dreaded going,so to make that more bearable and make the whole thing more enjoyable,I wanted to ask if you Joe would come with me?”
JOE’S POV
Kyle just asked if I’d go to his sister’s wedding with him, because it’s hard for him I’m guessing he wants the support. “No offence dude, but don’t you think sharing a room and going as your +1 to a wedding is a little gay?” I raise my eyebrows at him. He chuckles. Rebekah just looks at me and I know she’s hating on me for making it sound like being gay is wrong. I have nothing against them, her best friend is gay.
“Ha.I thought you might say that. And yes,it is. That’s why I then decided I would like both of you to come.” he pauses for a moment “you don’t need to worry about the costs. This is on me.” Before I can say anything..
“We can’t let you do that!” Rebekah says. Always so cute and responsible. I’m thinking about it now,it would be amazing, but she’s right,he might have money but flights to Greece alone are expensive, plus everything else. It’s too much to say yes, predicting this Kyle puts his hand up..
“Stop. I knew both of you would argue. But what’s the problem? I have money,I want you guys there so I’ll pay for you to go. Besides it’s only really the flights,I’ll be staying at my family’s villa by myself so you can share with me. It’s big enough!”
I looked at Rebekah only to find she’s wearing the same expression as me. Probably having the same mental battle, between excited, shocked and thinking that we honestly couldn’t just accept it..could we? She smiles at me which tells me she wants to go. I knew she’d want to,she loves traveling and while we’ve been to a few places in our 7 years together Greece is still at the top of her list.
