James POV ~
I sprint across the endless rooftops of Sector 7 as the chilling rain pours down from the storm clouds above. The sound of lighting echoes around the city vibrating on the endless rows of metal houses as thunder strikes a house close by. The freezing rain pours down unrelenting on my unprotected body, my jeans and black t-shirt soaking it up and making my movement choppy. The loud echoing of shouting and men's metal soled boots reach my ears as I launch myself off the ledge and onto the next building barely dogging a well aimed bullet as it pierces through the sole of my shoe.
I swear harshly as I try to stop myself from spinning out of control on the ceramic roof tiles having to grip the tiles causing a few to come lose and fall the two stories to the ground. I manage to grip the drainpipe just in time to stop just before the edge breathing heavily as my body shakes from the fear and cold. I pause listening for the footsteps below only to hear nothing, I edge closer to the edge slightly peering over the side to see the guards on the ground, unconscious and a broken tiles surrounding their bodies. 'Well that's convenient' I muse letting a ragged laugh escape my lips as I force myself to my feet again. I clammer up the slanted roof until I'm holding onto the highest point tightly with my left hand, I use my right to pry off my soaked black high-top converses, useless now with the uneven rubber. 'Guess I'll have to steal another pair' I think to myself as I stand up unsteadily on my bare feet. I mean after all that was why those guards had been chasing me. I'm a thief, and a good one at that, although finding back converses the right size was always a terrible bother.
I begin to walk slowly making sure my body was on a diagonal angle as my bare feet grip onto what friction I can on the slippery tiles. Suddenly lighting strikes again, right at the heart of the city and all the constant lights flicker before going out, everywhere. I bend down slowly clutching onto the highest tiles again as everything is pitch black as the storm clouds are blocking any chance of light from the moon and stars. I breath in deeply trying to ignore the very rational fear of falling to my death as a sharp pain hits me causing me to lose my grip momentarily. For a second I think I've been shot but discover myself wrong as I inspect where the pain is coming from. It's in my mind, I hiss as it increases cursing it harshly begging it to subside as slowly my grip weakens on the rooftop as the unbearable pain hits me again for the fifth time this month. I fight against it slowly finding my grip once again as I begin to pull my sunken body to my feet only to scream out as it increases tenfold. My legs buckle as it overcomes me causing my mind to lose all recollection of my surrounding. I fall, barley feeling the sharp tile edges digging into my sides as I slip down the steep side of the roof, I don't even acknowledge my body tipping over the edge, falling in mid air or the crushing pain of the impact as I land on the small baloney that was thankfully below me.
No, instead I can only concentrate on the loud male voice shouting inside my mind.
'Accept the shadows, accept the power for it is our only hope.' It yelled as I blinked up at the black void about our planet as rain soaked into my clothes.
The only hope for who? I have absolutely no idea, but in my hazed state where everything hurt and drowsiness gnawed at my body I whispered the words, "I'm already a shadow. I've already accepted my fate" before I gave into the blackness.
