For the first time in months, Gilbert Blythe found himself walking through the woods, on the same worn, familiar path to the Avonlea school. The trees lining the path were almost all bare, and the air was a bit chilly. It was late October.
He had only been home a few days, but his empty house made the memory of his father's loss even heavier, so he had decided to return to his studies.
Opening the whitewashed door to the schoolhouse, Gilbert stepped into the small area that served as a coatroom, and hung his thick wool coat and hat on one of the pegs. He put his lunch pail below on the bench, and walked into the classroom slowly.Though it was still early, many students were already there. Some of the girls stood near their seats, whispering. Gilbert walked towards the front of the room, where the guys were standing.
As he walked up to his desk, Moody turned around.
"Gilbert's back!" He shouted.
He was immediately surrounded by the other boys. They shook his hand and slapped his back. "Where have you been!" Moody gasped, "And why were you gone so long?" Through the uproar of greetings, Gilbert noticed Billy standing at the back of the group, scowling. He clearly hadn't forgotten their last encounter.
Gilbert turned his back to the bully, laughing. "Give me some space, guys, and I'll tell you all about it!" They stepped back. "I've been working on a steamer all summer. I saw New York, Boston, and jst got back from Trinidad. . ."
He trailed off when he heard the schoolhouse door open again, and a group of girls entered, some laughing and talking. His heart jumped.
That was Anne's voice.
