"Paige, your letter is here!" Mrs. Hyland called from the kitchen.
Paige had submitted her college application to Yale a few months ago, and ever since she was waiting for an acceptance (or rejection) letter to arrive.
"Finally," she whispered, before rushing downstairs.
In the kitchen was the daily mail, along with an anxious mother and an official-looking envelope with the Yale slogan stamped on it.
"Go ahead, open it honey," her mother squealed excitedly.
Carefully, Paige tore open the sealed envelope, and soaked in the information. In an instant her face fell.
"Mom," she whimpered. "I got in!" Her expression went from upset to overjoyed instantly, and she was amused to have (yet again) pulled a prank on her gullible mother.
"Paige, don't ever do that to me again, I almost had a heart attack!" Kelly cried, clutching her chest.
It wasn't a surprise that she made it into an Ivy League college, Paige sure didn't get straight As, but she had good enough grades that no one was surprised when she said she was applying for Yale.
The brains ran in her family. Her brother, Josh, was at Harvard, while her sister Brooke studied at The University of Arizona, and both her parents went to Cornell. Paige was expected to get into a good school like the other members of her family.
After the excitement between Paige and her mother settled down, she noticed another envelope on the counter. Of course it was probably just a bill, but it stood out to her. She examined it closer, and noticed it was addressed to her, Paige Mackenzie Hyland.
She picked it up slowly. "Mom, where did this envelope come from?" she asked curiously.
"I didn't even see it honey," her mother replied, looking at a magazine.
Confused, Paige took the envelope to her room, closed the door, and cautiously opened it. What was written on the fancy stationary was an invitation for a party she would never thought to attend.
Greetings!
If you have received this,
you are therefore linked
to the death of Abigail
Lee Miller and are cordially
invited to spend one week
at the Abby Lee Dance Company
to discuss this serious matter.
Attached is a plane ticket
to Pittsburgh, your plane
leaves tomorrow at 4. If you
do not accept this invitation,
there will be serious consequences
on your part, so I advise you
make your presence, no questions
asked.Until you attend this reunion
tomorrow, have a safe flight
and good day.Paige was utterly confused. So many questions were running through her head, and it pained her that she couldn't answer any of them.
Who sent this?
Should I go?
Reunion?
Who else got this letter?
What would I tell my parents?
Putting the thoughts aside, Paige remembered she had a decision to make. After thinking it through, she decided to go. After all, she was already guilty enough, she couldn't afford to have to pay to whoever sent the letter.
And if this was some murder mystery guessing game, it would make her look even more guilty to reject the invitation.
--
That day, six other girls received the same exact invitation. They all made the same decision as Paige had, which was wise. They knew that they were all guilty, and the one who didn't go would look instantly suspicious.
I can tell you one thing: they had all committed terrible crimes, but only one of them was guilty of murder.
