Hopes.
Dreams.
And even love.
All things precious can shatter. Because precious things are always the most delicate and brittle. That retarded thought of anyone ever being safe is a brutal lie. An event can lead to catastrophe, ruining one's life and scattering them into shards of never ending grief.
Armin Arlert was a promising young child. Darling. Beautiful. Precious.
That is why Eren Jaeger is here at the hospital. Waiting or his Romeo to wake up from the restless sleep he had been unwillingly sent into. His eyes scanned over Armin's almost lifeless body, nestled into thin blankets, a wave of depression overwhelming his body. His gloriously empty shell lay peacefully, any scars left from the event had been erased. All- except for the one. Eren gently lifted the sheets peeking down to his torso. There it was, plain as day. Jagged stitches pierced Armin's godly skin. In the very place the windshield wiper of the car that hit him nearly stabbed him.
He was there when it happened. When his everything was shattered. The moment that could have costed Armin his life. When a drunken driver had veered onto the sidewalk, crushing several of his delicate ribs. Armin had never lost beauty, golden hair and bright blue orbs for eyes-covered by eyelids like seashells complimented his already perfect features. "Someday."
"Someday you will wake up. And when you do, I will be waiting. With flowers and cake. I remember how you loved cake, of course... I'm certain you miss it. It has been seven years. I promise you, it won't be long." Sadly smiling, Eren looked to the calendar. Seven years today. November eighth.
Gently, he placed his hand on Armin's cheek and dragged his fingers up to his eyes, slowly sliding the eyelids up and looking into them. Emotionless and glossy, but still shining with his last flares of enthusiasm.
It could be many years until he get to see them aflame once again.
•••
Worn, rain-soaked clothes hugging his small body. Blonde, bowl-cut hair sticking to his face. Blood and rain dripping from his worn-torn face. Life nearing an end.
But it wasn't just his life on the line. It was also Eren's.
So no matter the consequence, he will save him. Years of training lead up to this very day- the one he will die- the very day he will lose his life to save humanity's last hope. His friend. His love. His life. Eren Jaeger.
Armin Arlert will save Eren Jaeger.
Feeling a weak lump shift at his side, he covered it's ears to block out the screams. The screams of his dying comrades. Screams silenced, giving birth to many more. Guns clicked, aimed to fire. Hearts throbbed, not wanting to be seized. Hearts wanting to be free, not to be crushed by the angry fist of bondage.
It was his turn to be silenced. Smiling weakly, Armin ran a careful hand through the lump- Eren's- hair, brushing it out of the way of his large, turquoise orbs. "It's alright Eren. It was meant to be this way. Not that I'm pleased, we all knew one day bondage would prevail. One day, Eren. One day, you will see the ocean. Let that be a token, proving to you that I am still alive, but in a better place. Our paths will cross again. Never forget, I lov-"
Gunfire. Silence. One remaining scream.
The scream of the last and only surviver of the Scouting Legion.
Eren Jaeger.
