His voice was shallow, yet precise and weak
The cold wind moving his brown locks everywhere
This time was so bliss and sweet
For the only words that I could hear
Were mumbles coming from the boy with brown hair
"Lyn get your fucking ass down here right now!" Isis had shouted from below, making me groan in annoyance. "I swear Lyn, if I have to get up there, I'll personally throw you out the window!" She screamed again.
"Fine, I'm coming!" Dragging myself off of the bed, I miserably walk down the stairs, wiping the crumbs off of my shirt. When I get down there, I'm met face to face with Iris, and her two-faced boyfriend. It had been nearly 5 years since my parents had died, and the only person who was able to take care of me was Iris, my sister who had run away from home to live with Tommy, her boyfriend. I cried for hours when they told me Iris was never coming back, leaving nothing but a letter and the left over cupcakes we hadn't eaten that day. I wasn't that upset with her, but the lingering feeling of betrayal was still present. "What's the problem, sis." I ask as if speaking her name was like poison.
"Schools tomorrow kiddo, so we're going out shopping." She smirked, as Tommy had stared off into space. I wanted to protest, scream, throw a fit, but I couldn't find the words to. It always felt as if the world wasn't on my side, and I wasn't ready to go back to school. This had to be the 7th school I've transffered to, and I was getting tired of moving around all the time. Whenever I thought I'd finally settled and made friends, Iris had to take that away from me. She only cared about herself. I thought, grabbing a grape off of the coffee table and plopping it into my mouth.
"So? When are we going?" I asked monotonously, making sure my voice wouldn't waver. I didn't like the fact that she may see me as someone weak, always depending on someone, like she was with Tommy. He looked at me with a hint of satisfaction, trying to get any other kind of reaction from me, but I wouldn't stoop so low to the point where I'd punch him in the face. Although, I was hoping I would, until Iris had replied. "We're going in 5, so get your shit together." She sighed, picking her cherry red lipstick up and applying it to her lips. I've always wanted Iris's eyes, she had the same colour as mums. They were a deep blue colour that shone beautifully when they hit light. Her hair was a light blonde colour that slowly mixed in with brown, just like dads. As for me, I looked nothing alike compared to Iris, who had mums eyes and dads blond-ish brown hair. My eyes were a dark forest green, while my hair was straight and red. It kind of represented the fur on a fox, except it wasn't that hard to tame.
I sighed, grabbing my wallet and heading out to the car. "She's nearly 18 hun, she can live by herself." Iris hushed him as I walked by, rolling my eyes. "She's a brat babe, besides, she already gets enough from the money your parents gaver her."
"Shut up Tommy." Was all that was left of their conversation. I didn't know whether they wanted to keep me for the money mum and dad left me, or because they felt sorry for me. The first option sounded more believable. They both got into the car, Iris frustratingly moving her hair out of the way and Tommy trying to not look like he wanted to throw punches.
When we got to the mall, Iris had already walked up ahead. "Keep in your lane, kid." Tommy had spoken harshly, as if I caused trouble all the time. I hated him, I hated him so much. He took away the only family member I had left, and turned her into someone else. The automatic doors had slid open, and warm air had brushed against my face. Iris had turned around to speak, but didn't bother when she looked between Tommy and I.
"Come on kiddo, let's get your stuff," she sighed "Tommy you can go get dinner, we meet here in an hour." She strictly spoke. I always wondered who was the pants in their relationship, and I always thought it was Tommy, but seeing how Iris could handle things, I'm guessing it was her.
We found a stationary store full of children scattered along the many rows of scented pencils and erasers. "Iris!" A guy had shouted out. He came running over towards us with a basket in his hands. "Hey Iris, haven't seen you in ages." He breathed out, obviously tired from the run.
"Hey Kayden, has been a long time." She mumbled back, staring boredly into his eyes. "Kayden, this is Evelyn, Evelyn, this is Kayden. She's my sister." As soon as I was mentioned, his attention was directed at me. His eyes were a light grey, resembling that of a knights armour. His onyx hair glued back with gel and he seemed to be around 5'10 - 6'1, as I was only 5'7.
"Hey, nice to meet you Evelyn." He said, shaking my hand with grip, which kinda creeped me out.
"Well, we better be on our way then. Nice talking to you Kayden." Iris hadn't always liked talking to people, so I guess that was our que to leave."Uh yeah, nice talking to you too." Iris sped walked out of the store and into the main area of the mall. Before I could say my goodbyes, he stopped me and asked for my number. "Sure." I smiled exchanging numbers with him. He was the first person to ever ask for it, and finally, even though we had just met, I knew that we'd be friends.
When we met up with Tommy, we went home and set up dinner. It was silent until Iris spoke up. "Ahem, so Lyn, about Kayden." She trailed off, and I knew what she was trying to do. Trying to make him sound like a terrible person, push them away from me. But I wasn't going to have it today.
"No Iris, whether you like it or not, Kayden and I will be staying friends." I firmly stated. She stared at me with her usual blank expression, and for the first time in years, I saw the corners of her lips rise. She broke out hysterically, holding her gut and trying not to choke on her saliva. "Kiddo, you didn't let me finish." She laughed between each breath. Even Tommy thought it was quite unusual. "Kayden's in the same year as you, so I was thinking, maybe we could visit him tomorrow morning?" She asked hesitantly, glancing up at me. "But we don't have to if you don't want to see him." My eyes lit up, and I jumped for glee.
"Yes Iris, we should go!" I exclaimed, maybe a little too loud and happy. She chuckled, watching me do a victory dance. Maybe the world finally was on my side
