Continuation of the previous chapter, but it's not necessary to read that one before reading this.

Richard comes back to join Christopher after finally getting Joel to come out of the dressing room and get his butt on set. He looks somewhat flustered, and noticing this, Chris asks him about it.

"I just walked in on something I probably shouldn't have," Richard replies simply with a shrug.

Normally, Chris would probe further into Richard's answer. He always likes to be up on the gossip within the band; there are hardly any secrets between them, but that makes the ones that exist even juicier. But he doesn't ask, not today. He has something else on his mind.

When Christopher doesn't respond to a joke that Richard tells, that's when he notices that something is up with the older boy. He traces Chris's line of sight to Zabdiel a couple of yards away, standing very close to the girl he's paired with in the video and talking with her in a hushed voice.

"Yo, what's your deal?" Richard asks Chris, waving his hand in front of his face.

"I don't have a deal," Christopher replies stubbornly, not breaking his gaze.

"Yeah, man, you really do," Richard says with a laugh.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You're looking at that girl like you want to rip her to shreds." Richard takes Christopher by the shoulders and swivels him away, forcing him to pay attention.

"Fine," Chris admits begrudgingly. "I just don't understand why he's so all over her. She's pretty, sure, but whatever. It's obvious that she's just a fame-seeking airhead who wants to get close to him so they can go out and he can shower her with money and popularity and—"

Richard cuts him off. "But why do you care so much?"

"Don't you care?" Christopher scowls, still sneaking glimpses at the pair out of the corner of his eye. Zabdiel keeps glancing over at him, too, looking visibly uncomfortable in the situation. "He's our friend, we shouldn't let girls like that use him."

Deep inside, though, he knows there's another reason he wants to keep this girl away from Zabdiel. Although he hasn't fully admitted it to himself, he doesn't want Zabdiel to be with anyone but him, as unrealistic as that is.

"He's also a grown man, he can make his own decisions," Richard reminds him gently, placing a hand on Chris's shoulder.

Just then, the girl leans in on her tip-toes and whispers something in Zabdiel's ear. Zabdiel has his gaze fixed on Christopher, looking uneasy. Chris shakes Richard's hand off his shoulder; he's going to rescue his friend.

"Hey. You." Christopher gets right up in between Zabdiel and the girl, speaking to her directly. "What do you think you're doing?"

The girl stumbles back a few steps. "Uh, talking to Zabdi? Sorry, I didn't realize that was a crime," she says smoothly. Meanwhile, Zabdiel is blushing like mad, with no idea what to do.

Chris feels his blood boil when he hears her call Zabdiel by that nickname. He steps closer to her again, pointing his finger in her face. "Yeah? Well, 'Zabdi' isn't interested in you. Get the message? You probably couldn't tell how uncomfortable you were making him, behind your fake eyelashes and with your face in his neck, but the whole time he looked like he was looking for a way to escape. Basically, he doesn't want anything to do with you. So you can save all this"—he gestures at her whole body—"for when you're on set."

From his spot across the room, Richard watches this all play out with raised eyebrows, wishing he had some popcorn to go with this high-quality entertainment.
