My mother once told me when I was young,
"Marry the man whom you want to spend your life with"
I knew them was an underlying meaning to this.
And now I know what that is.
My mother shared a life with a man who wasn't
a good man. He was angry and sad.
He would throw his hand in the air like a child who didn't get what they wanted.
Accept instead of landing at his sides, they landed on her.
And yet, she still loved him relentlessly. She still does; even though they no longer see each other.
This taught me that they were not perfect. Not even close. But no doubt they loved each other.
Now that I am old enough to have a relationship. I get it.
So to my unknown lover,
I know you are not perfect. I know all your flaws.
I might not point them out, but I don't want to.
Because I know you are trying to get better every day.
Whether that is anger management classes, or leaving an abusive relationship,
I know this because I am not as perfect as you may think.
I am trying my best to get better.
So why try to make our relationship perfect?
Why not try to make it the best it can be?
Because we are not perfect.
