Prologue: The Guy who isn’t mine.
His touch always sent sparks down my body. He always brought a smile no matter the pain of that day, and every time he says my name my heart skips a beat. He is beautiful, kind, funny, and totally and utterly not mine. But I don’t care, and I never really will. By the way, my name is James, and this is my story on getting the guy, before time runs out.
I always knew I was never like anyone else. I never got that feeling my friends would describe when they talked about girls. I always thought it was just a hormonal catastrophic setback; that soon, I would be normal, having girlfriends. But I soon saw that it wasn’t worth it. It started with a boy named Alex. He had those twinkling eyes and dazzling smile that always brought me in. But I fought those feelings, being terrified, wondering why I felt this way. What would my parents say? They would never accept me! But I couldn’t fight it. I have fought everything that my family believes in, but I have accepted the fact that I am gay. If only my parents could.
I met Lucas when I was 14 in the middle of fall, the first day in the new town me and my parents had moved to, them trying to escape my “gay-ness.” I was in the forest nearby that I used to escape life. As I was writing my latest story, I heard a rustling behind the tree I was perched in.
“Whatcha writing?” I heard. I spun around, almost falling out of the tree. A boy with dark brown eyes, and shaggy brown hair stood behind me. He giggled, smiling at my probably horrified reaction.
“Who are you?” I asked.
He smiled. “I am Lucas McAnthony. A pleasure to meet you, good sir.” he bowed a deep long bow, and I leaned against the tree, grinning from ear to ear. “And you?”
I jumped out of the tree, bowing to him as well. “I have the deepest pleasure and sorrow to be James Rowelin.” We smiled at each other. “Why are you here?”
He spun around, making the bright Autumn leaves fly around him, in a colorful whirl. causing his eyes to sparkle in the afternoon sun. “Just like you, I come to escape the cruel homophobic world you have met out there.”
A spark of hope filled my chest. “So, you’re...”
He turned and looked at me, and smiled. “Gay. Been that way for a year now. And you...?”
“Same.” I answered. “So, is this town really as bad as you say it is?”
“Worse.” He sighed. “I swear it’s like... it feels like...”
“The whole world is against you?” He turned and looked at me, and I felt my stomach flip flop.
“Exactly.” We looked at each other, and smiled.
“So, have long have you lived here?” I asked, curious to learn about this new person I had met.
“Twelve years. Don’t remember where I lived before. So I’ve known this place pretty long. You gonna need a guide?”
I smiled, staring at his eyes. “I would love one.”
And that is how I met the guy of my dreams, and my best friend.
