Chapter 1:  The New Girl in Town.

“Hey James, what are you doing?’ I turn around, and motion at Luke to sit by me.

“Hey. Nothing much, but I swear, Mr. Kiplinger is seriously trying to be more ‘hip’, and it is not working. He tried wearing skinny jeans. Skinny jeans! Worst moment of my life.” Luke laughs, and my heart pounds. I’ve gotten good at hiding it from him. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t stop me from thinking about him. All the time.

“So, did you hear about the new girl?”

I looked at him with surprise. “You know I’m not a gossiper. Besides, why would you care about a girl? Remember?”

“Ha ha, very funny. Well, this one is... different.”

Suddenly, I heard everyone go quiet. I turned around, and saw the new girl. Her hair was bright red, with orange and yellow streaks, making her hair look like it was on fire. Her hair was up in a ponytail, and eyes were dark olive green. She wore a black mini skirt, a red tank top, tall black converse that went up to her knees, and a fedora with a butterfly on the corner. She also had an olive colored watch, and an apple necklace. She had amazing fashion sense! Than, to both me and Luke’s surprise, she walked up to us, and took a seat right by me, and smiled at me. She got up, and gave a quick curtsey.

“Hi. I’m Adene Chenai Hackett. My first name means fire, and my second name means pure in heart. I don’t know if my last name means anything. May I have the pleasure of knowing your names?”

I smiled. She was different. And it was amazing, for a change, to have a girl who was different. Not seeming to be obsessed with makeup, boys and gossip. She was unique.

“I am James Rowlein, and this is my best friend, Lucas McAnthony.” Luke smiled at her. Ugh, he was doing his flirty smile. I was use to it. He was a flirt machine.

Of course, a guy can get jealous, right?

“You can call me Luke.”

“And you can call me Adene, though I’m sure you knew that.” She smiled.

“So, when did you move here?” I asked her.

“Last week. We moved in on Jungle street, number 5698.”

“That’s about where me and James live! I live on 5696, so right next door to you!” Luke said, smiling broadly, like he had just met Darren Criss, his favorite celebrity.

“And I live across the street, 5697.” I chimed in, glad to hear that the Jacksons had finally moved out. They always tried to get me to eat their half baked oatmeal raisin cookies, though their two evil cats Whiskers and Muffins trying to scratch my eyeballs out, were not without their charms.

“Yay, we can hang out!” Adene said grinning from ear to ear. “I better go,there’s a Drama club meeting. Bye!” She then sprinted away, but not before Lucas had winked at her, and smiled that flirty smile again.

“Were you flirting with her?” I instantly asked Luke as soon as she was out of sight.

“What does it matter? You jealous?” He leaned in, looking at me with those gorgeous eyes. I blushed slightly.

“Of course not! I was just wondering. So.... were you?”

“What do you think? Oh shit I’m gonna be late for biology. I gotta go. Bye James!” He then ran to the door, bumping into people as he went. I laughed a little. It was only 12:35, biology starts at 1:10. I mean, I sit next to him. Than why did he leave?

I sighed. Why was he so cute? I always fall into his trap.... damm.

“You like him, don’t you?” I whirled around, to find Adene standing behind me.

“Is it that obvious?” I asked, blushing almost as red as a tomato.

“Nope. I’m just better at feelings than most people.” she said, propping herself up on her elbows, tilting her head to the side like a little puppy. “Best friends right?”\

“Yep. Been that way for about 4 years, since the first day we met.” I sighed, daydreaming about his bright blue eyes, those amazing eyes...

“Rough.” She sighed. “It’s that bad, aye?”

“Worse, because he is a flirt beyond compare.” I said.

“I saw.” She laughed, throwing her head back a bit. “Is he gay?"

"He is as straight as a ruler. except he is the bendy kind." She laughed.

"So, you need help getting out of this pickle?”

I smiled. ‘‘I would love some help.” I laughed a little, remembering the day I said those words to Lucas.

We shook hands, and that is how operation Luke started.
