I have no friends. Well, that was my mindset anyways as I laid sprawled across my couch with the television on in front of me. A laptop was propped up on my lap and a bowl of food was sitting on a table past me. My eyes were glued to the computer screen as facebook was pulled up. Immediately I pulled up tetris and started duelling to gain stars.
Wait, I'm boring you aren't I? Well, sorry, normally my life isn't usually this boring. Actually, in one week I'm off to Washington D.C. for a leadership program. WYSE to be exact, it stands for Washington Youth Summit on the Environment. I'm going to go there with about 300 other kids that are my age, going into either senior or junior year in high school. This WYSE thing is where my summer really begins. So, let's skip to it!
Setting the scene, it's one week from where we started and it's finally time for me to leave. I'm in the car with my mother, both excited and nervous since this would be my first time riding a plane by myself.
When we got to the airport we had a brief farwell as I wished to be on my way as quick as possible. I made it throuch security fairly quickly and then searched for my gate. I checked my bag for my schedule and quickly read it over,
Get on plane - 8:30
Arrive in Baltimore - 12ish
Meet with Laurie & Megan
Arrive at other airport & meet with WYSE staff
I smiled at the small sticky note as I read through it, this would be a pretty damn great day if I do say so myself. I soon found my gate and set down my stuff, one suitcase, one purse, and one laptop. They were all my carry ons so they had to be somewhat small. I left my suitcase standing so that my laptop and purse could stand up on it.
Around me the airport was buzzing with movement, a little ways away there was what looked to be a camp gathering around an adult. They all wore matching shirts and were about the same age. They were young, and I hoped to God that they weren't going to be on my plane. It's not that I didn't like kids, it's just that I didn't really want to spend 3 hours on a plane with a group of 8 year olds.
I found an availible chair then sat down and pulled out my phone, checking for text messages. The only one there was one from my mom wishing me a safe trip. Told you I had no friends. Anyways, I quickly tuck my phone away and looked around the airport for any other light blue shirts. A couple of months ago we all got light blue shirts with WYSE's name printed on it and we were to wear it on arrival day. I frowned as I noticed that no one else was wearing a shirt like mine. Well this sucked. I hoped that there would be at least one other student that I could ride the plane with. Oh well.
I looked over at the little desk with the flight attendant and saw that it was almost time to board the plane. So, I got up and gathered my belongings and headed to the little line of people. I had to struggle a little to get my boarding pass out of my bag, but I did it.
A little announcement went over the intercom saying that boarding for the flight was beginning for first class. I sighed, leaning on my suitcase and then checked my phone one last time before turning it off. Another announcement went off and then I was shuffled onto the plane.
The next few hours passed in a blur, but that might be because I fell asleep. Anyways, there was one person sitting next to me, they looked sort of young, and their parents were sitting behind us. She had long brown hair and large brown eyes, the only reason I remember her is because when I woke up I noticed my legs were stuck together with gum, turquise gum that I remember her chewing at the beginning of the flight. Well, that was great, my nice khaki pants were now ruined. Awesome.
When the plane finally landed I was in a slight mood due to that girl. She didn't apologize even though she watched me try to scrape her gum off my pants and leg. Anyways, when I got off I was then on a little quest to find Megan and Laurie, my friend and her mother.
