Apinae Euglossini
Commonly known as orchid bees or Euglossine bees, Apinae Euglossini is the only group of corbiculate bees whose non-parasitic members do not all possess eusocial behavior. Most are solitary, although a few are communal. A. Euglossini can be found throughout the Americas, and are distinctly recognized due to their brilliant metallic greens, golds, and blues.

Chapter Two: Euglossini
When I wake up, Wanda is already gone. The bright light streaming through the curtains causes me to wince, and I roll over to check my phone. Lucky for me, I've awoken just before my alarm is set to go off. It's just past seven, and I pull myself from the warmth of the covers and stumble over to the bathroom to get ready.
Who the hell thought that taking an eight a.m. class was a good idea? Oh, that's right. Me. Of all the classes to take, I had to pick one that starts at the ass-crack of dawn. And not only that, but I had to be a go-getter and pick a fucking mathematics class. Why? Because it's a required course, even for environmental sciences. Whoever came up with that stupid rule, I'm going to find him and I'm going to kill him.
After taming the dark mane that is my hair into a manageable bun on the top of my head and changing into a decently clean pair of clothes that I find lying on the top of my suitcase, I grab my backpack and head for the door. The college cafeteria is in the building across the street, and I move towards it in a hurry.
A buzzing sound sends me reaching for the medicine I have in my bag, the kind that keeps my allergies to bees under control. I've always loved bees, they're beautiful and fascinating, but I've been stung one too many times for my liking. Ever since I was stung over the summer, I can't seem to get away from them. It's like they're following me or something.
Along the way, I spot a familiar face smiling at me as she bursts through the door of the dorm building. Carol jogs up to me, her roommate Pepper trailing slowly behind, and I forget all about the buzzing around me.
"Good morning, Sarai," she greets, brushing her short blonde hair back in place on the top of her head. "Care to grab a bite to eat with us?"
I nod and sign a reply. "I was just heading there."
"Then you have math, right? Great! So do we. Pepper, you remember Sarai from last night."
Pepper catches up and waves slightly with a sweet smile. "Nice to meet you."
I turn to Carol and sign, "Does she know ASL?"
"I do," Pepper replies in Carol's place. "I can't sign to save my life, but I do understand it. You'd be surprised how many people know it when there's a deaf kid on campus and the only language offered is ASL."
"That's right, she hasn't met anyone else yet!" Carol gasps, pulling the cafeteria door open for me. "Well, boy have we got a freakin' surprise for you. There are some characters at this college."
I enter the building and am immediately hit with a wave of sound and smell. The various scents of breakfast food and coffee fills my nose. The large room around the corner is filled to the brim with students. Most of them are unfamiliar to me.
Pepper walks over to a table nearby and sits down beside her boyfriend, Tony, the one that helped me get into my dorm last night. Carol and I follow suit, and Carol offers me a seat between her and Pepper.
