kane | atalanta

I fiddle with the straps of my bag, standing right outside the music room, waiting for Kane Arronson.

I find it strange to call someone simply by their first name when you haven't had any interaction with them. It's too personal, too close, it's like acting as if you've known the person when you haven't even exchanged smiles.

Kane Arronson is interesting. The mysterious is the enciting. Everyone's intirgued by him, maybe even scared to some extent.

But one thing I do know about him is that he's taking an awfully long time in getting here.

We had met up briefly in the break to decide that we would meet at the music room after school ended. And, he's late. The worst part is that I can't even open the door since it's locked, so I can't practice my vocals.

This sucks.

I lean my head against the cool metal door and suddenly hear footsteps.

I look up and there he is. Panting with his hand on his chest. He looks like he's just ran a marathon. His hoodie's down and O can see that he's wearing black sunglasses. "Sorry I'm...late...had to- do something..."

I nod in understanding, before titling my head to the door. "Well? How are we gonna get inside? The door is locked."

Kane just nods and unzips the front pocket of his bag (with difficulty, might I add), and reveals a silver key.

"Wait...how do you have a key?" I gape, staring at him. He simply shrugs and moves forward to unlock the door. He's right beside me and ughh, why can't he move away? He's far too close.

I huff and move back, watching as he puts the key into the lock and twists it, pushing the door open. We step in wordlessly; Kane sits on Mr Lykos' spinny chair and I grab a plastic one from the side and sit on it.

"So...what's your name, again?" He asks. "Mr Lykos wrote it down for me but I, uh- can't pronounce it."

I roll my eyes. People can never pronounce my name. At least he was honest about it though. "Atalanta Cosmetatos. And you're Kane Arronson."

Kane nods wordlessly, before standing up and making his way over to the covered paino.

He grasps the deep burgundy cloth covering it, revealing a shiny black piano gleaming with the sun filtering in from the window. I almost gasp at the sight of it. It's so beautiful, glittering and twinkling like that.

Kane sits down on the piano bench and looks down at the ground before speaking, "I'm just gonna play a song and you have to sing along. I want to see what I'm working with."

"As do I." I say loudly, crossing my arms. The nerve of this guy!

I see his lips twitch up into a teensy tiny smile and I quickly look away. It's so unnerving seeing him looking at the ground and replying as if I am the ground. Has he ever heard of eye contact?

"Which song should I play?" He asks, twirling around a ring on his thumb. That's kind of cute.

"Hmm, how about that new Taylor Swift song that recently came out? Gorgeous? Have you heard it?" I lean forward and stare at him intensley, hoping he'd at least look at me, but he continues playing around with that ring.

"Yeah, I've done a piano cover of it before. Okay, let's start." Kane says, rolling up his hoodie sleeves. I catch sight of his toned arms before I avert my eyes.

I nod once more, rubbing my hands together. I raise my hand in a 'wait' gesture, composing myself.

"Well? Are you going to start this century or...?" He raises an eyebrow.

I almost gasp at his rudeness. Oh my god! It's only okay when I say that. Not when somebody else says it so me. Why, this stupid little--

"I'm starting! Gosh, no need to be so impatient." I roll my eyes again before closing them, taking a deep breath, and starting to sing.

I peek a glance at him when I hear the soft melodious sound of the piano being played. It sounds glorious.

"You should take it as a compliment
That I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk
You should think about the consequence
Of your magnetic field being a little too strong"

He looks glorious. Sitting there, bobbing his head slightly, his head tilted to the side, with a small, small smile playing on his lips. Those dark tinted glasses still covering his eyes.

"And I got a boyfriend, he's older than us
He's in the club doing, I don't know what
You're so cool, it makes me hate you so much"

I wanna see those eyes. I bet they'd be beautiful. He's already so gorgeous, so his eyes should be too. Maybe they're brown...or blue...or green...

"Whisky on ice, Sunset and Vine
You've ruined my life, by not being mine"

By now, I'm singing with all my heart and all my passion. Singing. I love singing. Singing is my most favourite thing ever. I close my eyes and enjoy the feeling that I get while doing the thing I love. I wish I could stay in this moment forever.

"You're so gorgeous
I can't say anything to your face
'Cause look at your face
And I'm so furious
At you for making me feel this way
But, what can I say?
You're gorgeous"

I finish the verse, feeling on top of the world. Singing makes me feel free, like I'm flying. All problems and stresses melt away as I let my emotions pour out in ways words can't describe. My eyes are still closed. And when I open them, I look at Kane. I can't see his eyes, but I hope he's looking at me. Because I can't stop staring at him.

Because I can't stop staring at him
