The directions in your hand claimed this to be the place, but the building you found yourself in front of seemed long since abandoned. Dust lined the steps to the door, as if they hadn't been used in many years despite the offerings sent this way, infrequent as they were even that should prevent this kind of disrepair. Did you have the wrong place? No, no. Walk into the forest until you reached an old stump overgrown with mushrooms, then turn to the southwest until you reach the mansion with the high fence. Perhaps your compass was broken? You had passed many old looking buildings long since abandoned before arriving at this one, was it further in? Though the trip was said to be over before nightfall, and despite the dense forest above the sunlight that snuck through gave the impression of the sun beginning its descent to make way for night. This had to be the place. Maybe vampires just kept dust bunnies for pets, perhaps that would explain the unsightly entranceway.

Or- Magic, that could also do it. As your knuckles rapped against the old wooden door, you found them connecting with wood less chipped and rotten as you had seen. As your knock rang out from the wood the old building you were seeing melted away to make way for a rather well-kept mansion to take its place within your sight. The change extended out past the bricks and into the gardens as even the weeds changed to bushes of flowers and well managed trees. The sound of a gate shutting behind you shocked you away from the wonderment of the new mansion, and whether by magic or something else, you found the rusted old gate set in the stone wall was now a spotless dark coloured metal, closed from its previous state of being not only entirely open, but aged to the point where you couldn't even imagine it being pulled shut without the hinges shattering. A trick of the repairs?

"Well, are you coming in or are you just going to stand there?"
A voice from behind called to you, though lead to no figure when you turned, the doorway was left open for you despite the owner of the invitation being nowhere in sight. Had you the choice to leave, you would take it without a second thought, but unfortunately this was your duty. You would not be allowed to return home if you fled from this fate, and who knows what could befall your home if you did choose to flee. You were sent out here with the distinct purpose of appeasing the supposedly bloodthirsty beasts after all, though whether or not they were truly as dangerous as the tales you had heard repeated to you over and over as a child spoke of them to be is unclear. The stories spoke of a large number of the beasts, craving nothing but destruction and suffering, leaving fractured bones and shattered families in their wake, if they left anything at all.
There was no way a single human could satisfy even one of these monsters, how were you expected to quell the rage of the multiple residents warned of by the village elders, especially when you were to keep this spite contained for what would be considered longer than even the healthiest human's lifespan. But that was the way, and you had no power to overwrite the traditions.

"Really now, you don't need to be shy. Please, come in." Yet again the voice spoke, and yet again it seemingly had no origin. You decide it would not be wise to offend an unseen and unfathomably dangerous foe by keeping them waiting, and so you step into the mansion. The inside is just as clean as the outside had become after the illusion had fallen, and despite the rather lax furnishing, the foyer had a warm sense of welcoming that pushed to settle any complaints you had with the arrangement, it was unsuccessful in curbing all your doubt but it was still comforting to some degree.
"Welcome." You'd looked around the whole room, and as expected, the owner of the voice was still nowhere to be found, "Everyone is waiting for you in the living area ahead, don't be afraid." The voice was calm and friendly, it sounded genuine, despite the fact that it belonged to something that was destined to destroy you. Still you heeded the instructions and headed forward into a hallway leading deeper.
