"Thank you for taking care of the bath and the story tonight." Tara cuddled to her husband. "It's been a long day."
He ran his fingers into her hair, delighted by the soft purring escaping her lips. "How about we also retire early?"
"What's wrong with the living room?" she teased, slowly unbuttoning his shirt.
"Let's see... no door to give us a two-second warning of an upcoming visitor." His hands traveled under her top. "No blanket to cover your beautiful assets should this young visitor enter the room with no door." His logic made her giggle. "Only one carefree weekend a month, princess, and we just enjoyed one," he said, grateful for gift her parents gave them.
"Would you carry me to bed?" she asked, her hands reaching behind his neck. She was feeling particularly cuddly tonight.
He gently lowered her on the bed, joining her after shedding his clothes on the floor. They leisurely explored each other, a luxury they couldn't always afford. He caressed her, his hands noting the softness and the texture of her skin, the firmness of her body, the swelling and tenderness of her...
His passion-induced mind pushed his concerns aside. Later, much later, he would address them.
"Tara?" She rested in his arms, her heart still beating furiously in rhythm with his, her skin still damp from their lovemaking.
"Yes?" She traced lines over his muscular chest.
"I was thinking, princess. You haven't been yourself lately in the morning and—"
"Oh no, mister!" She straddled him, her elbows coming to rest sharply over his chest. "You are NOT missing your brother's wedding tomorrow. And you are going to behave very properly."
She frowned, his laughter no exactly what she'd expected to hear.
"As long as you're by my side, I will endure that wedding. It wasn't what I was getting at."
"Myles, I'll be fine. When I got up at noon with Carter, it was the best I felt all week. I think I got over whatever hit me."
"Really?" Could he have been mistaking the signs?
"You sound... disappointed," she said, wondering if her imagination was playing tricks on her.
"Yes... no... well... it's... see... since..."
"Okay, Harvard, what did you do?" she asked, his babbling acting as a guilt indicator.
The bag was in plain view on the night table. He would never be able to hide it without raising even more suspicions.
"Tara, we've been together for almost two months, and it isn't like we... we used much protection during that time."
"Much?" Her brow rose in amusement. "I believe the right term would be NONE... because a certain someone kept forgetting to get to the drugstore."
"Well, seeing how you felt this week, I stopped by the drugstore."
"Why now?" she asked, confused by his intentions. "After the first week, didn't we agree we were letting nature surprise us?"
He handed her the bag, realising they were on totally different wavelengths. She gasped when she pulled the small box out.
"You think we could be pregnant?" she asked, her voice rising with excitement.
"You tell me." Though he loved where her mind travelled. "We share the same bed and the same bathroom, princess. And I'm a FBI agent. I'm trained to notice inconsistencies."
