“Tsunade-sama, I’m sorry.  But I can’t take this mission.” Hikari apologizes to the woman in front of her, “My parents aren’t home from their mission yet and Arai can’t take care of herself yet.”

“Hikari, I know you want to take care of your sister.  But it’s not your responsibility.  It’s your parents.”

“But I can’t just leave her alone!  She’s my sister, I won’t abandon her!”

“I’m not asking you to abandon her!  I’m asking you to do your duty to this village!”

“I won’t take this mission until there is someone to take care of Arai.  That’s final.” Hikari states cooly, bowing slightly before exiting the room.

Arai finds her older sister in the family’s training grounds later that day, viciously throwing weapons at different targets.  She watches silently from the door, hidden in the shadows, as her sister finishes her practice.  Hikari picks the weapons up slowly, before bringing her fist down on one of the targets in anger.  She leans against the wooden post, tears pricking at her eyes as she tries to hold back her anger.

“It just isn’t fair!” she screams in frustration, throwing the weapons down and running her hands through her flaming locks.

She takes a seat against the post, her face in her knees as she begins to cry.  Arai is shocked at her sister’s sudden weakness.  Not knowing what to do, she runs from the house and to the only person she knows Hikari will trust.

“Iruka-sensei!  I need your help!” she shouts at the teacher, startling him from where he’s taking care of a few plants in his garden.

“What’s wrong Arai-kun?” he questions, standing and slipping off his gardening gloves.

“It’s Aneki!  I don’t know what to do!  You have to come help!” she begs, grabbing his hand and attempting to pull him down the street.

“What’s wrong with her?”

“She won’t stop crying!  She’s sitting in the training grounds and she’s angry!  I was watching her train and I’ve never seen her like this!  Iruka-sensei, I’m scared!” the young girl looks up at him with wide green eyes, filled with tears.

“Alright, let me get some different shoes and we’ll go.”

“Hurry Iruka-sensei!”

Iruka washes his hands quickly and slips on his shinobi sandals before following Arai through the streets to their home.  The two enter the eerily quiet house with caution and Arai points to the sliding doors that lead to the training grounds.

“Okay, I’ll take care of her.  Why don’t you go up to your room okay?”

“Okay… Don’t hurt her though.”

“I won’t.  Don’t worry Arai-kun.”
