Chapter 2

Unedited

"Hi, we're here to see Zach Lincoln." I said to the lady behind the desk.

"Third floor, room 256," she smiled at us but I didn't return it.

"I hate this place," I mumbled as we walked away from the desk.

"I know," Mac said back. "Man I hope this goes well," He mumbled barely loud enough for me to hear.

We stood in the elevator quietly then proceeded to walk down the hallway.

254. 255. Ah, 256.

Zach's name was written on a white board with blue ink. His favorite,  I thought to myself.

"Here we go," I said and looked Mac's way. We opened the door to see my little brother sat on the hospital bed with a baseball in his hand. Before he noticed us he looked down at the ball sadly. He'd played baseball for nine years before he was diagnosed with cancer. It was his passion, at the age of 13 he had scouts on him and giving him letters to college campuses.

"Zachy-poo!!" Mac yelled and the nurse shushed him, which he ignored.

"Mac, Lea!" Zach said happily. "I missed you guys!"

"I missed you too," I told him. "Hey, so I have to go into a meeting with your doctor, will you be okay with Mac for a little while?" I asked but they basically ignored me, with a 'Yeah,' and the continued on with a conversation with Mac.

"See you in a few, Blondie," Mac called as I was almost out the door.

"Ah! Lea, I was just looking for you!" Doctor Manor said from behind me, making me jump. "Follow me to my office," He started walking and I followed.

I looked down at my hands, they were shaking slightly and my lips were quivering. This could either go really well, or terribly. Doctor Manor opened up a door and motioned for me to follow.

"Sit down, Lea," He told me. Inside the room there was a big table surrounded by chairs. "I have some good and bad news. Zach is responding to the medicine perfectly, and at this rate his cancer should be gone by the time Christmas rolls around."

"Really!?" I asked as I grinned ear to ear. He nodded. I did a mental happy dance inside my head. "So what's the bad part?" I asked, my happiness not completely disappearing but slightly fadding.

"Well," He looked down at the paper. "It seems that you've been late on paying the hospital bill about three times, and this time you under payed it by about a thousand dollars. Because your mother was responsible for health insurance, and now she's gone, you have none. I'm sorry to say but if you don't come up with the thousand dollars, along with the bill for this month, we are going to have to stop the treatment," He told me with a frown.

"What!? You - you can't do that!! You know that we can't afford it, I am sixteen and I have to partly raise four kids! My brother had to drop out of university to help us!" I panicked,  tears forming in my eyes. "And you can't, you can't take him off his treatment. He can't die! I made a promise, " I whispered, a few tears fell of my face and onto my blue shirt.

"I'm sorry Ms Lincoln, I have tried everything I could do," He left me in the room to myself.

Once I made sure that there were no signs of any tears being shead, I decided to head back to Mac and Zach. I walked into the door only to be smacked in the face with a football, and laughter shook all through the room. I opened my eyes and saw Zach pointing a Mac and Mac just looked at the ground trying to hold in his laughter.

"Mackenzie O'Brian,  what the hell did you hit me with a football!?" I yelled trying to sound angry but failing miserably.

"Urm, it was an accident?" He told me.
