You could say that I don't have a normal family

You could say that I don't have a normal family. It's true. I don't. I'm the youngest of five and the only girl. So after mom died of breast cancer in October, we became even less normal. If that was even possible. We lived in a nice home in Ohio. Dad had a nice paying job, and mom did leisure work down the street at the local bakery so our home was pretty large. She loved to bake, she made the most amazing brownies. But I can't exactly think about that right now. Today I am finishing up packing before me, my four brothers and my father catch a flight to Oregon. Yes, I have FOUR brothers. I'm the youngest at seventeen. Cole is one year older than me by one year making him eighteen, and the youngest brother. Reese is nineteen, Collin is twenty, and the eldest brother Ace is twenty-two.

It came as a big surprise to me and my brothers when my father came home one night, said he had asked for a transfer to his hometown of Portland, Oregon. Stating we needed a fresh start. So that's where we are now doing our final check of the house before we catch our flight. "Hailey! c'mon let's go!" my dad shouted up the stairs. "Coming!" I shouted back. Looking back out my empty bedroom window one last time, I walked out of my old bedroom holding on to the last fragments of my memories made here.

"You doin' okay kiddo?" Ace asked me while ruffling my hair. "Yeah, I'm fine. And stop doing that!" He knew I hated when he did that, but none the less it put a smile on my lonesome face. One thing to know about me is that I have a serious phobia of heights, so I was not looking forward to the flight ahead. I dressed the comfiest I possibly could. A random volunteer t-shirt I had, and black sports leggings with my vans. My wavy brown hair pulled up in a loose ponytail. "Where's Reese?" I asked Ace. "I honestly have no clue," he said. "Great lemme go find him then, we're gonna miss our flight." Reese was by far my favorite brother. He knew how to cheer me up. Especially after mom died. He would always be there for me, basically, he was my best friend. The amount of comfort he provided during that last fall, I don't think I will ever feel again. At least not from any other person. "REESE! WHERE ARE YOU! C'MON YOU'RE GONNA MAKE US LATE!" I all but screeched into the house. "IM COMING HAILS CHILL!"

I think it was a good thing that we were leaving Ohio. After my mom died, a lot of my so-called "friends" distanced themselves. A few hanged around for a little bit longer. But I lost all of them when I heard my sorry excuse for a best friend Emma Dixon talking to Avery Sheck. Telling her how she thought I was a crybaby over my mom's death. Our family knew her cancer was terminal, but it still left an empty hole in our hearts when she passed. So after Emma basically backstabbed me, I was friendless in the most depressing time in my life. I felt empty and alone, like a black abyss. That was about four months ago. It was a little over a year ago that my mother passed.

Boarding our flight to Oregon, my stomach was doing flips better than any trapeze artist in a circus could. Heights scared the crap out of me. Actually, it wasn't the height that scared me, it was the fear of what could happen if I fell from such a tall height. Walking down the narrow aisle to my seat further increased my fear that I was about to be forty thousand feet in the air. Reese was in front of me and Cole behind me. At least we got a seating arrangement to ourselves. Reese got the window seat, with me in the middle, and Cole on the aisle. Dad, Ace, and Collin all sat behind us. Dad helped put our carry on's in the overhead bin before we all sat down. Strapping my self in I tuned out the flight attendants reading the safety instructions, and the crappy lunch menu. Soon after the pilot announced we were about to depart and I grasped Reese's warm calloused hand in my own. "Hey, it'll be okay Hails," he spoke softly to me. And as the plane ascended further into the sky my grip became vice like on Reese's poor hand.

After the plane became steady and the pilot gave the go-ahead for electronics, I took my phone out and plugged in my headphones, and I tuned out the world once more. Letting the melodies of the songs put me to sleep. Welcome to Oregon Hailey, was the last thing I thought before I let sleep take over me.

About fours hours later we arrived in the mighty state of Oregon. "Welcome to Portland!" My dad shouted at us once we left the airport. Since it was already November, it was pretty chilly out. "Geez, dad how cold is it out here?" "Around forty-two degrees. I told you to dress a little warmer." I scoffed playfully and looked away. After gathering all our luggage in the back if a taxi, we started the journey to our new home. Dad said on the plane, that it was a lot like our old one, and that it wasn't too far away from the airport, only about an hour.

We arrived in our new neighborhood, and like dad had said it looked a lot like our old one. Neat lawns, and a few colorful plants that survived through cold temperatures. The one thing about our new house was that it had three stories, instead of two. But the third floor only had two rooms, so naturally, I sped out of the car to pick the best one. Me and Reese decided to share the third floor, but that doesn't mean I was going to let him have the better room. "AY! HAILEY WAIT UP!" Reese shouted at me, while I bounded up the stairs. "NO, YOU'RE TOO SLOW!" I laughed back at him. The third floor had two bedrooms one on the left and the right of the hallway. I chose the right one because it faced the front of the house, and after looking between the two it turns out they were both identical. I left all my stuff in the car so I could find my room, so while I waited for slowpoke Reese to bring me my stuff up, I sat in the bay window thinking about how much my life has changed.

If only I knew that it was going to change even more drastically when I met the boy four houses down; Mason Williams.
