Ch 1

It was raining. Of course it was raining. First day Senior year and I have to stand in the rain waiting for the bus. So much for sunny California. I can't believe we moved here. It was my Mom's idea, said it would be good for us to get away. She didn't say that it would be half way across the country. I can see a yellow bus rounding the bend. I wonder if it is mine. I saw three busses pass my stop already, each with a different name. "San Diego South Shore." My bus. I get on and find the first empty seat. I look around the bus. Most are sleeping, I guess they aren't early risers. I pull my hood on and turn on my music.

When I arrive there is a older lady standing at the door greeting the students as they entered the building. I tried to avoid her but she seemed to lock onto me like a cruise missile. "Hello." she said. Standing at about my chin level she was short and wore glasses that looked as thick as a stack of quarters. "You must be one of the new students. Welcome to South Shore High!" Her voice being much too happy for being the first day of school and early in the morning.

"Yes I am. A senior. Transferred this year and I--"

"That's great! I remember my first year as a senior," she says, cutting me off. "It was a long time ago though, I will admit. Here is your schedule. Have a nice day."

Classes throughout the day were just like back home. Math, Science, English. Soon it was time for lunch. I looked for an empty table in the lunchroom but I couldn't find one. I looked around for a quiet spot. The best I could find was the Library. I sat on the floor in the fiction area and put on my music.

Soon I feel a tap on my shoulder. I being startled stood up fast and pulled the earbuds out of my ears.

"I am sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." She was pretty. With long brown hair down around her soldiers.

"You didn't scare me!" I defended. She just rolled her eyes.

"My name is Jessie. And you are?" she stuck out her hand, I shook it.

"Jason. I am new here."

"I can tell. No one has ever been sitting in my spot before today. Don't like the crowd in the Cafeteria?"

"I am not what you would call very social." The bell rang ending lunch period.

"Well Jason, You're doing good so far. Hope to talk to you later." She walked out and disappeared among the flood of people headed to there next hour classes. I just stood there for a second waiting to see if I could spot her further down the hall. I knew I had to see her again.

The rest of the day went by in a blur, a study hall, Spanish class. Soon it was time to head home. I, with help, found the right bus. As I boarded the bus I noticed that Jessie was setting alone toward the middle of the bus. I pulled my hood on and tried to avoid eye contact. I didn't know what I would say if we started talking. I got to the back and found an empty seat. The bus started moving. I turned my music on and closed my eyes. I feel someone sit next to me. It was Jessie.

"Hey there. I didn't know you rode this bus! So cool!" I didn't know what to say so I just nodded.

"Yeah, so cool." We talked (more like she talked) all the way through town and until my stop. I got to to leave. So did she. After we got out I noticed it had stopped raining but was still not sunny. As I was walking I noticed she was behind me. I stop and wait for her to catch up.

"What, you following me now?" I ask.

"No, are you following me?" Both of us were very confused. So we walked. Didn't say much. Waiting to see who would stop and go inside a house. Soon we were at my house. "Well this is my stop." I said. "See you tomorrow." I walk up to the porch and watch as she walked down the sidewalk to the house next door! When she gets up onto her porch she turns and looks at me. My jaw must have been scraping the ground.
