Flowers in Autumn
It's early in the morning, but for Rose, it feels like this day has been the longest day of her life. The streets are empty except the fallen leaves and this emotionless girl with eyes dried out. She's on her way to the nearest bridge from the hospital, the hospital that didn't save her family from dying, the hospital that won't save her either. Now seeing the bridge clearly through all the fog, makes her heart beat even faster, faster than earlier when the phone rang at 4 am, when the voice she can't get out of her head told her, her family died in a car crash.
All she can think about is how unfair it is that her little brother just got to turn two years old. While she has celebrated her birthday 19 times already, why is her heart beating so perfectly fine while he is already frozen? Why did she ignore her parents when they begged her not to move out? Why is it so hurtful to lose someone you once yourself abandoned?
You know it's kinda funny how quickly a person can change. Rose was always the independent girl in school, the kind and cheerful girl you were proud of being friends with. But if you saw her now, with that dark shadow looming over her you would think those big clear eyes of her had suddenly turned grey from green, and that shiny clear skin of her possibly turned whiter than snow. It looks like when her family left, they took all her energy and light with them. Still, that little girl she once was would never attempt to do something like this, and she knows that too. As Rose takes her last steps before standing on the bridge, she can feel that the little smart girl is screaming, trying to make the feet stop walking. But she couldn't, and she's slowly drowning into the dark mind of this new Rose.
It's not the first time someone has lost their whole family like that, and It's not like she can't keep living. Her workplace is a nice place, she doesn't have financial problems and she already lives by herself. But that's the reason she's staring over the ocean filled with regret. About a year ago, Rose moved into a new apartment without her parents' approval. But even when she hurt her parents, they would visit to check if she ate enough, knit her clothes in the winter and not even once complain about her never visiting them. And this morning, it looks like they were on their way to visit her. Knowing that its slippery because of the rain, knowing the car tires were worn out and knowing their daughter would once again not appreciate it. Now because of that Rose feels like she has to die since they died because of her stubbornness. People, they have always talked about how Rose is the only girl in town, that live alone at this young age. And if she lives, she will have to listen to them keep talking about how her family died trying to visit their daughter. Because again,, she's living alone, but Rose is just too tired for that.
As Rose has made her decision, and grabs the fence, she can feel something vibrating from her pocket. She looks at the name on the frozen screen. Her childhood friend Lucas, the only person she kept in her life. Rose doesn't know why but she slowly breaks down, as he asks about how her week has been. "it has been good, until today"
He must have heard her silent sobbing as his voice turned serious. "what happened?" "They are all gone, and I miss them so much"
She didn't need to explain much more before he told her he would take the first plane to Nottingham. "It's not necessary. I want to get away from this place as fast as I can, and I don't promise anything but I will think about moving to your town" About a minute after their conversation is over, her tight grip on the fence loosen. Could she live happily with him? After a long time, all her childhood memories placed a smile on her face. And with the conversation with Lucas, a bit of hope appears inside her like the sun is slightly brushing against her cheeks. But, is that enough? Actually... which side of the fence is she standing on? Is it possible for a rose to keep on through the autumn or even the winter at all? Are all flowers supposed to fall when autumn comes?
