Prologue: It was a moonless night and the air was choked by the humidity of the storm brewing over the dark streets of the seemingly sleeping city. Most days, the evening would be filled with the sound of countless poeple going about their lives in this bustling city. But tonight, everyone was inside, waiting for the first strike of lightning that would indicate the beginning of the "graza" a very large summer storm. But not everyone was huddled up safely in their basements. Two shadows were aproaching each other across the street. "Is it done?" asked the smaller one, a hunched figure with a vioce as rough as gravel. "The mother is taken care of. The child should have no distractions in her future." answered the other, in a hushed, almost undesinguisable voice. "And the father?" the small man inquired. A knowing smile spread across the tall one's face. "He shouldn't be a problem anymore."
Chapter One:
Present Day, Sacramento California.
"Mom, Im going running!" Skyler shouted and ran out the door, swinging her backpack over her shoulder and fumbling with her headphones. It was a bright California morning, typical for a 7 am in the summer. Sticking her headphones in her ears and blasting on her music, Skye set of at a jog, her feet lightly hitting the pavement, cracked from endless sun and heat.
An hour later, Skye slid into a seat at Menchies, one of her faverite frozen yogurt shops. After a few minutes, she saw gap in the crowd by the yogurt machines and siezed her chance, piling fruit, candy and frozen yogurt into her bowl before it got too crowded again. Skye pulled some change out of her pocket and payed, quickly rushing out of the shop as soon as she was done. Menchies might have had the best frozen yogurt ever, but it was so... cutesy. Sky grimiced. She hated anything having to do with cute. Pink, frilly ribbons, lace and flowers? Uh, no thanks, she prefered a tank, basketball shorts and Nike running shoes. Sitting down on a curb, she sighed in content and the cold, tangy yogurt slid down her parched throat. A shadow fell over her. "Hey." she glanced up. A tall boywith redish auborn hair and bright blue eyes was smiling down at her. "I dont know you." she grunted and pushing herself up, threw her cup in the trash and walked briskly away.
"Hey wait!" the guy jogged up beside Skye and stepped in front of her. "I saw you in your yard. You live in Red Wolf Valley, dont you? I just moved in this Thursday, so I dont really know anyone else in the neighborhood." Skye stopped and studied him her eyes narrowed. "Why should i believe you?" she finally asked. "Oh." he looked down, embarressed. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didnt introduce myself. Im Chris." he smiled shyly and held out his hand to shake. Skye didnt know why, but for some reason, his ignorancy made her trust him. "Skylar." she said simply and trudged down the sidewalk. "So, you go to William's High?" he asked, almost hopefully, Skye noticed. "Um, no." she looked at him, her eyebrow raised. "It's the middle of summer." she added, and watched Chris's face break into a grin. "Oh. Haha, thats cool. I'm going to be going there this fall. Well, I gotta go... see you." he smiled in farewell and ran over to a car that was waiting for him. As soon as he climbed into the passenger side, the car drove off.
"Well that was cute." a familier voice chuckled behind her. Skye breathed in sharply and squeezed her eyes shut, a shiver going down her body.
