"What are you doing?"
"I'm sitting."
"Yes, I can see that, but why are you sitting?"
"I didn't know it was against the law to sit."
"Alice."
"Perfectly law abiding if you ask me-"
"Al-"
"Honestly I don't know why you're even asking, what a strange thing to ask me anyway. I'm sitting. People sit. It's literally the only reason people have butts."
"Alice!" Mom swatted the back of my head with the magazine that was in her hand.
"OW, what the hell Mom?"
"Why aren't you heading to school, it's almost eight! You're going to be late!"
"I'm not going." I stared directly ahead of me and didn't turn to see my Mom's face. "It's a wednesday, nothing happens on wednesdays. I figured it would be all good if I just stayed home and did some study on my own."
A beat of silence passed.
"Sorry, I must have misheard, but what was that you said to me? Did you say to me, your mother, who brought you into the world, and reared you into a young woman, the mother who pays for you to go to the only private school in this town, that you're not going? Is that what you said?" Mom's voice got progressively louder and I started to think maybe my wording could have been a bit better.
"Um, I mean when you say it like that- Ow! Jesus! Okay, okay I'm going!" Mom was still beating me with her magazine as I went around the room putting my shoes on and throwing textbooks into my backpack.

So much for getting a day off.
It was worth a try though, but I wasn't being completely dishonest. There really was no reason for me to go to school, not because there wasn't any school work to do, but because I wasn't going to be concentrating enough to get any done.
Mom was right though, I should go to school anyway. Who knows, today might be different from yesterday.
With positive thoughts giving a hop to my step I sped up my pace on the sidewalk and headed towards my high school.
A quick glance at my phone slowed me to a stop though. It was eight-fourty. School started in five minutes and I was still at least fifteen minutes away.
Great, now I'm going to be awkwardly entering first period after not being at roll call.
A quick thought flew across my mind, and I opened up Google maps.
"Yes!" I truimphantly whispered, if I cut through the two buildings beside me and cross the road on the other side I don't have to walk around the whole block. I would still be a little late, but if I ran....
Mind made up, I threw my phone into my backpack and zipped it up before taking off in a jog towards the small alleyway.
Dodging the bags of what I assumed was garbage put a thrill through me. I held just enough dignity not to fling my arms back and naruto run. Only just.
After avoiding what I think was my seventh garbage bag hurdle I glanced up to see how much further I had, when my left leg got caught on something and I stumbled forward.
I didn't even have time to scream, a tiny squeak left my mouth, I was falling, and then suddenly I wasn't. In the back of my mind, it dawned on me that a fall shouldn't be that fast. I didn't even see the ground rushing towards me before I felt the teeth rattling sensation of a hard hit to the head.
I instantly wanted to cry out in pain, but my vision slowing started fading to black. With one last whimper, I fell unconscious.

Feeling something grab my arm, I groggily opened my eyes. It was dark, but I could see the shadowy outline of someone crouching beside me. They were saying something, but I couldn't make it out.
Pain erupted behind my eyes and I whimpered. I could hear blood rushing in my ears and my vision started to fade again. The person shook my arm with more strength before patting me on the cheek. The pain in my head was too much, and I fell back into unconsciousness.

The first thing I felt when I was waking up was a hand on my wrist. I quickly flung my eyes open and tried to sit up, only to be gently pushed back down again.
A man sat beside me, he was talking gently to me but I had no idea what he was saying.
"Who are you?" I rasped out, my throat was dry and I felt extremely tired.
He raised his eyebrows slightly and sighed. I then took the opportunity to look around the room.
It looked like an antique building, all wood and hay and what looked like hand made furniture. I turned my questioning eyes back to the man.
He was definitely of asian descent, and was dressed in what looked like ceremonial clothes. He turned slightly and reached beside him, and lifted a cup towards me.
I slowly sat up while taking it from him and took a sip. It was water, delicious cool water, and I eagerly finished what was in the cup.
After handing it back to him, he nodded and stood to leave the room.
"Wait! Who are you? Where am I? I need to call my mom!"
Before I could fire more questions at him her pointed to himself.
"An ji shi." I repeated his words back to him with a questioning tone. He nodded and pointed to me tilting his head.
That must be his name. Is he asking for mine?
I hesitantly pointed to myself before weakly replying "Alice."
He repeated my name back, with a heavy accent turning the 'c' sound into an 'sh' sound. I nodded at him but stopped when I felt my head start to spin.
The man- An Ji Shi, motioned for me to lay down. As soon as my head touched the cushion I felt a great wave of tiredness, I didn't even bother to see if An Ji Shi left the room before I was sound asleep.
