Poor Mary Ann! She spent the whole morning clearing up the mess, and the she had to go without her dinner as a punishment for spilling the jam - though of course it was really Mary Jane who had done it.
Mary Ann forgave her stepsister, and tried to be nice to her - but the more she tried the more Mary Jane hated her.Maey Ann grew prettier and sweeter, and at last the stepmother thought that she really must send her away, for her own daughter looked so cross and ugly beside Mary Ann that everyone noticed the difference.
But how could she send her away? Her father would be sure to want to know where she was,and he would go and bring her back, for he was fond of Mary Ann.At last, after a great deal of rhinking, the stepmother thought of a plan. She would send Mary Ann to Ho-Ho Wood for some wild strawberries - and then perhaps she would never come back, for the Little Folk lived there, and had forbidden any mortal to set foot in their wood.
