Lucy fiddled with hair as she lay in bed. It was quarter past ten and she should have been fast asleep by now, but tomorrow was the big dance at school. She had yet to be asked by any of the fifth grade boys in her class and was worried that no one would.

After finishing the braid, she leaned back and shut her eyes. Scenarios of Bret, her fellow classmate, asking her to the dance filled her mind.

"Lucy?"

Her eyes snapped open. She quickly shot up in her bed and looked at the door confused. Why was her mom calling her downstairs? Had she forgotten to clean up something?

She let out a sigh, leaving the comfy bed. She threw on her slippers and exited the room.

It was dark. The only light came from the moonlight seeping in through the windows.

"Lucy?" Her mother's voice called from down stairs once again. It was louder this time, not muffled by the door.

She started down the stairway and replied, "I'm c-"

"She was quickly cut off by a hand grabbing her arm, pulling her back up the one step she had descended.

Her mother stood beside her, terror filling her eyes. "I heard it too," she whispered.

Lucy's eyes widened as she flicked her eyes back and forth between her mother and the stairs.

"Lucy," the voice said in a sing-song like voice. A creak came from the bottom step. "I need to see you."

Lucy's heart had fallen into her stomach.

Thump. Creak. Thump. Creak. Thump. Creak.

She knew she should have ran, but she was unable to move. Fear paralyzed her as she stared at the steps, waiting for something to materialize out of the darkness.

The footsteps stopped and an eerie silence took over the house. She could hear her mother breathing heavily beside her as she too stood horrified.

A hot wind rustled her hair behind her. The hair on her arm stood on edge.

"Lucy," the voice whispered directly behind her.
