Anita and Paul headed to bed around 8pm after thanking Demi for a wonderful meal that evening, they were tired due to the plane ride and wanted nothing more than early nights sleep before they spent the entire day out with the girls tomorrow. Demi had gone into the treat cupboard after seeing the girls sat on the couch with Wilmer and put the popcorn packets into the microwave. Once it beeped she split the bag into a few bowls and walked into the living room and handed both the girls a small pink bowl each and then was remained with one for her and Wilmer to share. She sat down next to Wilmer and had Sofia on her side, while Wilmer had Sara on his spare side. Demi snuggled her head into Wilmer’s chest and felt his fingers snake around her back and play with the ends of her hair.

The film was halfway through when they heard footsteps from the stairs. Demi turned her head to see Anita mouthing “sorry” for disturbing their family time. Demi kissed Wilmer’s cheek before she got up and went to see if she was alright.

“Sorry for disturbing your family time, I just wanted a glass of water” She smiled.

Demi nodded and walked with her through into the kitchen and poured her a glass of water and gave it to her. “You’re our guest you’re more than welcome to help yourself to anything” Demi reassured her. “Are you heading back to bed?”

Anita laughed. “Paul is snoring like there’s no tomorrow so I doubt I’ll be getting any sleep anytime soon”

“Would you like to come join us?” Demi’s eye glinted and Anita knew she would love too more than anything. She sighed and walked with Demi into the living room. Demi took back her place and lifted up to Sofia onto her lap and held her while she giggled lightly, Anita took her place and smiled at how happy her grandchildren were.

“Mama, is Grandma going to watch the film with us now?” Anita looked up and saw the panic in Demi’s eyes. This was the first time she had heard one of the girls refer to her, as there mom and she were very nervous to her reaction. She knew Anita approved of her being in their lives and saw how much she loved them but she didn’t know if she would. “Yep” She longed the p and saw Sofia smile when she felt her grandma hold her hand.

Demi remained silent for the rest of the film, even Wilmer had picked up on her how mute she was, he kept rubbing his hand over her leg and saw her try to show him a comforting smile towards his gestures but nothing seemed to make her chill. She wanted to ask whether it was okay but at the same time knew it would never be okay. She was taking over her daughter’s place and it hadn’t even been that long. How could she be okay with that?

The film ended and Wilmer picked up Sara and put her over his shoulder. She giggled as he tickled her stomach. “Right come on girls it’s your bedtime. Maybe if you ask nicely Grandma might read you a book before you sleep?” Anita nodded excitedly she was happy to be apart of their routine. They went upstairs leaving Demi downstairs to clean up the bowls and put away the few plates that had dried.

Wilmer came down a few minutes later. “Right both the girls are in bed, Anita is just reading to them, you coming up now babe?” He kissed her cheek.

Demi carried on putting the plates to the side. “I’m gonna finish down here then I’ll be up okay?” Wilmer nodded, normally he’d stay and help but he could tell by her facial expressions she just needed to be alone right now. He wasn’t sure what happened but he could see the change in her since she sat back down. He’d ask her when she came up to bed.

Several minutes later she heard footsteps again and thought it was Wilmer coming to check on her. He worried too much. When she looked it was Anita. “Do you mind sitting with me on the couch Demi?” She asked. Demi gulped and walked with her, sitting down opposite her.

“About earlier” She began. Demi cut in quickly. “Look Anita, I’m so sorry I didn’t think she would call me mama again, well I hoped she would but she hadn’t said it in a while and I just I get you might not like it but I didn’t have the heart to tell them they couldn’t and”

Anita smiled and held onto her hand. She could see the fear building up and it scared her slightly how nervous Demi was in this instance. “Demi, I don’t have a problem with it”

Demi was confused. “But I mean your daughter…”

“Yes, my daughter was their biological mother, but you are their mom sweetheart. They love you and I can see that so much. Earlier even Paul commented on how happy they are around you. Wilmer rang and told us about Sara being sick the other week and he told us how you stayed with her at the hospital. Those are qualities only a mom has with their daughter. They just want you to love them and that is what you are doing. As their grandma all I want is for them to be happy and that’s what you’re doing. I love that they call you mom” Demi’s eyes glistened from the tears that began to fall slowly down her cheeks. Anita rubbed away the tears and held onto her hands tighter.

“Now, stop crying and go get into bed and let that husband of yours hold you and when we wake up tomorrow morning we can take the girls out just us girls if you want?” Anita offered.

Demi nodded. It sounded like the most perfect morning. She had already planned what they could do. “Thank you” Demi got off the couch and walked upstairs. When she entered the bedroom she saw the worried look on Wilmer’s face as he saw her eyes. He could always tell when she had been crying and rushed out of bed to cup her cheek and rub anyway any stray tears.

“Baby are you okay?” the concern in his voice made Demi feel so loved. He would always protect her and care for her. Demi nodded and held onto his hand as he climbed into bed and pulled her over him so her body was close against his chest and allowed his arms to tightly wrap around her body to pull her in closer to him.
