Prologue
I sat down on the cold marble windowsill, looking out the window.
"Anna! Anna! Look at me!" Little nine-year old me giggled, running through piles of golden-brown leaves.
"Be careful Emmy, you might injure yourself!" Sister Anna laughed heartily, spreading her arms wide open and inviting me in, "C'mere you!" I ran and jumped into her arms. Sister Anna was the best sister ever! She would play with me, and she would always be there for me when I was down, and always stood up against those who bullied me and made fun of me.
"Hey there Emerald, look at you, so childish running here and there, and you, Anna why are you even playing with her? It's not like she's a real Emerald. This Emerald isn't even worth anything, she's nine now and no one wants her, that's priceless." Peter would snicker.
"Well, in my heart, it's no doubt that she's priceless, so valuable that not even money can buy. You're worthless, that you, an eleven-year old boy goes around picking on nine-year old girls, when you yourself is still here with us in the orphanage." Anna would counter.
I sighed, recalling the precious memories that formed seven years ago. Just a short 72 hours before Anna was unexpectedly adopted by a couple.
"Okay children," The owner of the orphanage, Gabrielle Kenton, smiled,"Today, a kind young woman is coming over and you guys have to be on your best behaviour, okay? Who knows, she might take an interest in you and you would have a family!"
"Emmy! This is our chance! We could become real sisters now!" Anna grinned and gave me a huge hug.
"Oh yes! I can't wait!"
I bluntly recalled that very moment, I was so happy of the thought of being in a family, in a family with Anna as my sister.
However, the thought that we would be separated, had never reached my mind, until -
"Oh she's a darling. I would love to adopt her, what's her name? Anna, is it?" The blonde, thin-figured lady smiled.
"Oh yes, Anna! You're going to adopt both of us, right? Right?" I bet my eyes were as big as saucers back then, I just never expected her next words to be so painful.
"Both of you?" She exclaimed, "No of course simply that would not do!"
Anna's smile immediately disappeared. "What do you mean, Emmy's not going to be adopted with me?"
The lady looked at Gabrielle, "I'm so sorry, I was not informed they were a package deal?"
Gabrielle glared at us.
Gabrielle glared, at us! Anna and I hugged, scared. This is the first time that Gabrielle glared at anyone in the orphanage, if Anna wasn't afraid, I was terrified. I was terrified of not only Gabrielle, but the fact that Anna could really leave me, all alone in this orphanage.
"Oh dear me, no! They must have misunderstood. This is Anna De'lancy, she's ten-year old. The other one is Emerald Silvers, they are most certainly not a package deal. Do you want to adopt Anna, then?"
The woman, who now looked absolutely sinister to me, smiled and nodded, "Yes."
A single word, Yes, had the power to change my life forever.
1st October 2005, The very date Anna was adopted, and one exact month before my 9th birthday.
Today is the 1st October 2013. Its another month before its my 17th birthday.
And if no one 'adopts' me within a year and one month, I would go homeless.
Oh but then again, of course. I am Emerald Silvers.
Who would want to adopt a coward, a dull, a useless kid like me?
