Chapter 6

It has been days, and you manage to force your way through the discharge process despite the many doctors and nurses that tried to stop you. You have already hacked into their paper trail and erased the information of the tumour in your brain, just in case Jake got curious enough to go search for your medical history under the fake name of Kieran Raizen.

You are in the backseat with Danaus and Dylan is driving because they don't believe that you are fine and think that you are just being childishly insistent to get home. Still, they cannot blame you for wanting to get home. The further you guys are away from anything relatively officially, the safer you are.

Besides, having had a bad experience of staying for months in a hospital before, you want as little to do with those white-washed bricks and the scent of dead skin on linoleum wall.

"So... K, I guess we should take a break? I mean the Klaviar stunt was pretty high profile, and I've got no doubt that they have Danny's best friend here in the FBI searching for us. They know it's not just Danaus, so we should go on a hiatus?" Dylan asks, looking at you briefly through the rear-view mirror.

"Kai." You say suddenly, a little surprised yourself when that name tumbles from your own lips.

Both men in the car with you jerk suddenly, shocked at the sound of your name. You had told them never to call you by name. It was name they knew, but never to speak.

"Call me Kai. My parents gave me a name to be used. No point calling me K anymore." You state firmly, and they have to nod. You don't know what made you suddenly want your name spoken, but it feels nice to have your name out in the open. You feel like you have your identity back.

"I signed that Klaviar, Patrick saw Danaus, but I made him forget. I marked Patrick. Far as I know, FBI will be after me. If Agent Cade recognised another Kitty... then he's after both Danaus and me. You and Jake, on the other hand..." You drift off, letting them fill in their own blanks the way they like it.

"But we work as a team, K... Kai." Dylan stumbles a little at your name, but you forgive him for his forced effort. You enjoy your name being spoken and you wonder why you never had it spoken before. You must have forgotten the reason.

"It is still entirely up to you to choose the jobs we take. I do not dictate that you follow us around. I'm going to lead FBI on another futile chase, but if you choose to set your own cons out there, I do not mind."

The car remains silent for the journey of a few more streets.

"I'll go with you, Kai. Cade's after me too." Danaus volunteers, and you make a grunt of consent. You know Danaus will never do anything without you and though you wish that he can be a little more independent, you decide to take things slowly.

Soon, you promise. Soon, you will have Danaus planning and running his own con, and not acting like your tool. Both of you have gifts too precious to be neglected, and soon you will have your little brother thinking about how to use that gift to get exactly what he wants. You hope your dead friend would be proud. You hope your dead friend would be happy that you're helping the brother that belongs to both of you. You hope that you can die a few years later, meeting him down there and telling him proudly that you have fulfilled his last wish.

"I'm coming along, just for the ride. Besides, you're the brains behind our operations. If you're not there to make sure things go right, I think Jake's gonna screw up." Dylan puts in, and you sigh.

"I want you three to walk out there and make your own cons in future. Why not start now?" You reply truthfully, watching the scenery pass by outside. The men are silent.
