Safe and Sound

Chapter One

I just finished up stocking the racks and I looked at the clock.

"Hey, Candy? I gotta go pick up Harry from school, I'll be back soon." I said to my boss.

"Ok, Honey." She replied and went back to ringing up items.

I walked out of the store and headed to the middle school. Luckily, I work only five miles away from the school. Our apartment is 10 miles in the other direction.

I always bring Harry to work with me after school and help him with his homework. Then he helps out with stocking the shelves and pricing things.

I arrived at the school and saw Harry standing at the front of the school talking to a girl. I smirked and watched him for a bit.

"Is that your son?" I heard a voice behind me.

I turned and saw a guy. He had bleached blonde hair and he was wearing all white. I have never seen this guy before.

"Um, no. He's my brother." This guy's eyes are so pretty.

"Oh. He's talking to my sister. I'm guessing you're going to tease him about that, aren't you." He said.

"Probably. You're gonna do the same with your sister?"

"Obviously."

"I don't think I've ever seen you before. Is she new?" I asked.

"No. My mom was busy today so I'm picking her up. Usually I'm at work."

"Oh. Well, I'm Paige, it was very nice to meet you." I held my hand out to shake his hand.

"Nice to meet you too, Paige. I'm Corbyn." He shook my hand. His grip was surprisingly strong.

"I should probably get back to work so maybe I'll see you some other time?" I said.

"Yeah. See you later, Paige." He said and walked up to his sister.

They said bye to Harry and walked off. Harry walked up to me.

"Hey, Paige!" He said and hugged me. We have a super close relationship, so he isn't embarrassed by me. We don't want to take anyone for granted because of the accident.

"Hi, Harry. How was school?" I pulled away from the hug and we started to walk towards the thrift shop, hand in hand.

"It was good. I Got an A on my math test."

"Awesome!" I fist-bumped him. "And who was that girl?" I said in a teasing tone.

"Just a friend, I promise. Her name's Stephanie. Her brother picked her up for the first time today. He's 19. Same age as you." He told me.

"Yeah, I met him. And I don't think I will be seeing him much. He said he works a lot."

"He works at NASA." Harry said.

"What?! And his sister goes to this school?! It barely passed the inspection!" I was honestly extremely surprised. The school, is definitely not sanitary. Only about 50 kids attend.

"I don't know why she goes there either." Harry said.

We talked about other things until we got back to the store.

"Paige, I'm so glad you're here. There's a guy outside and I need you to help him unload his truck." Candy said as soon as we walked in.

"Yes ma'am." I said and Harry and I went out back.

"Hey, I'm Paige and this is Harry. How can I help you?" I said to the guy leaning against the truck.

"Um, I've just got a couple of boxes but the lady wouldn't let me unload it all by myself. I'm Daniel by the way." He said.
