Chapter 1: The Beginning of My Nightmare...
"No mam, I will be perfectly fine walking home. I just had to work really late tonight for extra money, but you know I need that money for my Senior Summer Trip in 2 weeks..."
I glanced down at my watch as I stepped out of Yogurt Mountain. It was midnight....
"Bye Jerry! I'll see you Monday morning at 7!"
"Bye Ash!"
"Mom I know it's midnight but don't worry! I will be home in about 10 minutes or so. I'm gonna stop at that late night bakery down the block from Yogurt Mountain and grab a little something to eat before I get home. I will be fine!"
"Okay honey! I will be in the kitchen waiting for you, we have to add up all of your money to see how much more you have to get! Love you"
"Love you to mom!"
I hung up the phone and shoved it into my bag. The bakery was supposed to be open on Friday nights.....I just hoped I was right cause I could really go for a bagel right now.
I wonder how much money I had left to get before I had enough to go on our big trip? My graduating class decided to go on a cruise to Alaska! I could not wait....
As I was deep in thought I noticed a guy walking behind me. I sped up my walk to where he couldn't have noticed but I knew I was getting faster.
He just kept walking after me. I saw the bakery and I walked as fast as I could and saw that they were open.
A sigh of relief escaped my mouth and I walked through the door. The little bell rang and Marty, the owner, came out of the back.
"Hey there Ash. Long night at work?"
"Yes....ugh, while I was walking I thought I would stop by and get a bagel!"
"Okay", he stepped into the back again and then came back with a little brown bag.
"Here you go! Are you gonna eat it here or are you gonna head home?"
"Well I don't know, momma wants me to be home but before I came in here a guy was following me...it was really creepy."
"Ya, there is a lot of creeps out here at this time of night......wait! I have the perfect thing to help you.."
He ran out to the back and I kinda of just stood there looking at all of the fliers on his bulletin board. There was one about a missing girl from around here, I knew she went to our school because I had seen her around every now and then but I didn't really know her.
She was really pretty and she was about two grades younger than me. It is horrible when things like that happen to people around my age......it just made me wonder if something like that could happen to me. I mean if it happened to her, then there is a huge possibility that it could happen to me at any moment.
While I was worry about something that might not even happen to me, Marty came out from the back holding something in his hand.
"Here, it is some protection for you on your way home."
I looked down at the little can of pepper spray and smiled at him. Marty was always nice to me, he was a family friend and I had spent most summers at his house because it was way more fun than just laying around the house all day.
"Thanks so much Marty! You have always been there for me no matter what.", I leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek and hugged him before I walked out the little bakery.
It wasn't too far until I would be home but with it being night time and be being on high alert, it seemed like time stop and went on forever...
I held onto the pepper spray real tight in my hand, my eyes tarted from side to side to observe my surroundings.
