I'm on lookout duty for the night today. Count myself lucky, it's quiet and I'd haven't seen any zombies or threats for the past hour. The cooling night breeze was making me sleepy though I tried to keep my heavy eyelids open. Night shift was the worst.
I took a side glance and saw a shadow drew closer to me as the human climbed up the ladder. He stood at an awkward distance from me and I cursed Lucas for pairing someone with me on night duty. I'm not really the sociable type and preferred to do lookout alone. Guess he'd just had to ruined it.
The man was really tall and I felt intimidated somehow. I hadn't seen his face before. Was he the new guy that joined our camp a month ago? I remembered him being alone when Lucas first brought him in to the school.
Our camp was actually an abandoned school hidden in the forest. Nobody knew exactly where we were. But since last year I'd joined, we had about fifty campers.
"Want some beer?" I offered awkwardly as I couldn't stand it anymore.
He let out a long sigh. "Sure."
I heard the click of the can opening and him gulping down real quick as I continued to look out to the forest ahead. He must never have beer for a long time...
"I'm NJ." He introduced out of a sudden.
"Emily." I mumbled back. NJ...? What kind of name is that?
"Thanks for the beer." He said as he started to bend down, and rested his arms on the railing. Now that he was at the same height as me, I could see his face clearly. He actually looked good underneath that dirt on his face.
My heart thumped when he caught me staring, and our eyes saw one another. I quickly looked away as my cheeks started to blush.
"You're welcome." I whispered. What was that about?
NJ sighed again and said, "Quiet night huh?"
"Yeah." I lazily responded, leaving an awful silence afterwards.
"Hey Emily." He suddenly called my name and I nearly jumped. Were we already that close?
I didn't really want to face him but somehow, I did. My eyes widened when I saw him already staring at me.
"Don't you recognise me?" His abrupt question caught me off guard and I don't know what to say.
"Do I know you?" I felt dumb.
"I thought so." NJ was dejected. He turned away from me and finished that can of beer like he was really thirsty. "Nobody remembers the past nowadays."
His words got me thinking as I looked away, a strange sadness welling within me all of the sudden.
"Yeah."
