It snowed!
I haven't seen snow in so long. Where I lived, almost never snowed in California. The only time I've seen heavy snow like this would be in textbooks.
I woke up this morning wondering why it was so white outside for a November morning, when I looked out the window and there was at least a foot of it on the ground! I couldn't believe it, so I was staring out the window with eyes wide and mouth open like an idiot.
I run to mom's room and start shaking her awake. "Mom! Wake up, it snowed!"
She rolls over, showing her permanently tired face and rubbing her nose half-awake. "Mph...what?"
"SNOW, mom, snow! Come look!"
She lets me drag her out of beg, and I'm holding her hand and jumping up and down as she drowsily stumbles to the sliding glass door in the living room.
The backyard is covered by the white blanket, and the sky, which is also white, is allowing some more flakes to fall down onto the ground.
I can tell mom is still really sleepy, but her eyes widen a little as well. She rubs them- "would you look at that."
I nod excitedly. "I know! I know!"
I slide open the glass door, and we both sliver. Shakily, I reach down to touch it.
It stings.
I draw my hand back, forgetting that I'd underestimate how cold snow actually was. I try again, this time dipping two fingers into the powder and then quickly wiping them on my pajama bottoms.
Mom leans against the doorframe. "I haven't seen snow in years," she says, looking up. She shivers, crossing her arms across her chest. I stick my hands out and let some snowflakes fall on them. "The last time I saw snow," I mention, "was at the airport in Copenhagen. Before we went to America."
Mom nods, and begins to walk away. "I'd better get to shoveling."
"I'll do it!"
She looks back at me as I close the sliding door shut. "Oho? I've never seen you so exited to do chores."
"I...I just wanna be out there. I wanna feel the snow on my face again. Do we even have a shovel?"
"Have at it, then." She smiles. "And yes, we do."
---
I realize as much as I am mentally prepared for the snowfall I am not prepared physically.I am wearing a two sweaters and two pairs of jeans for lack of jackets and winter clothing, and the only thing I have for boots are the hideously thick leather ones mom made me take over to Japan. Thankfully though, I have gloves.
Shovel in hand, I stare at the white driveway. We have yet to buy a car, but I can tell it's going to happen soon. But for lack of car, there must be a lack of snow so said car doesn't freeze over when it arrives.
And with that, I tasked myself with clearing the driveway.
It was powdery, thankfully, so I didn't have to slave away at unearthing it from the concrete. Something about it made me want to eat it, but like most of my wishes, I had to restrain myself.
The tips of my ears were just beginning to get red by the time I was halfways-done, and so far, everything was going nicely.
"How are you doing out there?"
I turn around. Mom is leaning against the front door's frame, holding a cup of coffee. I wipe at my forehead and tug at my collar- "Pretty good. Almost done, too."
