She walked into the studio not knowing what to expect. Funny, she thought to herself, I'm Meryl Streep. I should know what to expect. But the truth was that she didn't. She was experiencing a whirlwind of emotion since she and Don had separated, something that no one else knew because she was not particularly proud of the fact. She knew herself very well, knowing just the thing to get her mind off her troubles. Work. So when Judy Craymer called to offer her the role of Donna in the upcoming film adaptation of Mamma Mia, a musical she had enjoyed so much on Broadway, she felt that it was the sign of a new beginning.
At the same time however, she just couldn't let herself think that. Don had been the love of her life, she couldn't just let go of him that easily. Internally, she prepared herself for what questions she thought the interviewer would ask, a trick she had learned early on in her career to combat her fear of public speaking. She could only think of the usual questions, the easy ones. Easier, I should say. Things like, What attracted you to this role? Tell us a funny story of something that happened backstage. Meryl didn't know why, but there was a part of her sensed that this interview would be different.
She took a deep breath and walked to the interview set. She noticed that there were three chairs in a semicircle: one for the interviewer, one for her, but who could the third one be for? Perhaps Amanda, thought Meryl excitedly. The two had gotten so close whilst filming the movie that they were practically a mother and daughter in real life too.
Meryl sat down and patiently waited in one of the chairs. She was very early and she decided to log in to her secret Instagram account to kill time until others arrived. Her heart dropped, however, when she saw Pierce Brosnan's latest post. It was him being interviewed with her.
She groaned, she wasn't sure quite how to feel. Pierce had always been simply wonderful to her and she had sensed a great need in him, a great need to be loved. She didn't love him, she would want me to make that clear. But rumours flew on set. People claimed that they had seen the two of them making love in a closet in between takes among other things. None of that had happened. Something had just clicked between them however, just a quiet understanding between friends. Yet, and here is something she never desired to tell a single living soul, she had had a dream that things would become romantic between them, and Meryl's reality almost always reflected her dreams.
But she couldn't open her heart to anyone ever again, she was sure of that. Her heart still ached for Don, her body yearned for his familiar touch. She always found that these thoughts filled her head if she ever had an idle moment and she had to bring herself back to reality by reminding herself why she had left him.
1. He never cared. Maybe he had once, but no longer.
2. He always accused her of having an affair with someone everytime she kissed them on the red carpet.
3. She was pretty sure there was another woman. Not 100% sure, but sure enough. The interview began. All the usual questions, no curveballs this time. The interviewer finally got to the regular old question, found in almost any interview, "Are there any interesting things that went on behind the scenes?"
Pierce playfully jabbed Meryl in the ribs. "What you didn't see was the paternity test, eh Meryl?" Meryl had to laugh. It didn't feel good to admit it, but Pierce was funny.
She reached over and grabbed his arm. "Shhhhh.... don't you know that what happens on set stays on set?" If there was one thing Meryl knew how to do in an interview, it was playing into how they wanted her to act.
Pierce looked at her, confused and yet amused. "Are you referring to the fact you simply never wanted to leave my side? That when I kissed you, you didn't want to let go? Remember, I kissed you like this...." He gave her a very lengthy French kiss. She knew deep down that he was probably just playing into what the public wanted of them too, but she couldn't shake this feeling of being home, the one blessing Don had never been able to provide. She recognized that she had felt the same when kissing him and upon seeing his beautifully tanned body after ripping off his shirt in Mamma Mia. She felt shivers down her back as she remembered the moment.
Suddenly, Pierce broke away, but he hugged her close to him. He whispered in her ear, "Come up to my hotel later? C'mon Streep, you know you want a piece of me."
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I hope you have enjoyed this chapter! I promise the next chapters will be way more romantic, but I thought I would keep the first chapter as just a background to our version of the Peryl love story. Special thanks to my husband Sam for helping me with grammar 😂
