A car drove silently through the night. Alarms were blazing in the distance. The woman driving looked worried and kept thinking what if I get caught, what will he think?
A voice rang through the office, "DETECTIVE, DETECTIVE HILLS" yelled Tom Appleby "DETECTIVE"
"what what WHAT" snapped Detective Connor Hills,
"there's been another one"
"another what?"
"Another murder"
"well that's hardly surprising we are the murder squad and don't slam that door you know I hate loud noises". Appleby's mind went back 6 months to their last big case; Detective Hills was shot in the leg and ever since has been paranoid that every loud noise is somebody shooting at him.
"There has been a prison break" said Appleby,
"a break out?" asked Hills
"no a break in, that's the murder. Somebody broke into Flinders Prison the high security men's prison out in country Victoria, and murdered one of the inmates." Hills got excited he hadn't had a good case in months. "Give me every thing you've got."
Hills went and sat behind his overcrowded desk, Appleby dumped a pile of files on the desk with a loud crash and Hills jumped a mile and yelled "CAN YOU NOT DO THAT"
"sorry boss" said Appleby in a small voice.
"Can we please get back to work?" said Hills angrily,
"so the victim is murderer John Gilmore, he died of belladonna poison that was injected into his neck. He was convicted two months ago for the kidnapping and murder of Jennifer Taylor. He has been sentenced to life in prison." Explained Appleby.
"Tell me about the suspects" asked Hills.
"There are two suspects, Gilmore's cellmate Charlie D'Amico, and the psychologist at the prison Dr Jeff Phoenix."
"What about the security tapes? Queried Hills",
"I have looked at the security tapes but they cut out ten minutes between 7:45pm and 7:55pm and the prison doesn't know how it happened. I am leaning towards the cellmate, because before the video cuts it looks like D'Amico and Gilmore were having a bit of an argument, and when it cuts back Gilmore is lying dead on the floor with no obvious cause of death."
"Where did D'Amico go?" asked Hills.
"Well, D'Amico had an appointment at 7:50pm to go and see Dr Phoenix the psychologist." Whether he actually went to that appointment is a question we will need to ask him when we go and interview him."
The next morning Detective Hills and Tom Appleby went to Flinders Prison to interrogate all three suspects. When they got there they both realised how huge the prison was, the front was made of a cream concrete. The walked through the door, signed in and went into the cell where Gilmore was murdered. Detective Hills looked around the cell and saw a white shelving unit in the right corner of the room, on the left wall there was a bunk bed. The walls were made of bluestone bricks. He looked on the white shelves in the corner of the room but found nothing of interest. When he looked under the bed he found a plastic bag under the bed that had a suspicious white powder in it, that may be a drug of some kind. "Appleby come look at this"
"it looks like some kind of drug" observed Appleby,
"I know that much, put it in your bag we will analyse it when we get back to the office."
