The grey day had taken over everyone's feeling especially Maia's. The day had started with the usual shrilling bell calling every student (that was not sick) from Miss Cornwell's Finishing school for fine young ladies to get up, get dressed and walk the dreaded hallways that led them to a just as terrible breakfast. Maia did this and was served cold porridge with an overwhelming salty taste. She put down her spoon and thought that she would have to go without breakfast again. Maia sore the empty chairs spread randomly across the vast silent room. She remembered the day she had arrived, the day when all the seats were full, the day before Miss Smith had been hired as the school chef. It felt like seconds to Maia till her first lesson, English started. Maia's best friend Catha gave Maia a note:
Dear Maia,
Do u even learn anything in English? It's so boring!
Do u think so?
Catha :)
Despite that Maia thought English was fun and interesting she still replied
Dear Catha,
Isn't it I hate it so much I wish I could get out of it.
Maia :)
The note back came as soon as she had looked up
Dear Maia,
Please ditch class with me.
Catha :)
No, I don't want to
Maia returned
Maia, please
Wrote Catha sadly
Please
No
Was Maias final reply
No
Please, please, please
Catha pleaded
Alright
Maia wrote feeling defeated
So Maia and Catha went to the bathroom till the end of class but when they got out they suddenly sore the trouble they had gotten in to. Dr. Jade (the English teacher) and Miss Cornwell were standing there waiting for them, they showed them note they had found on the floor and they were both put into detention for a whole week.
Later that day Catha said to Maia
"It's your fault you put my name on the note"
In a calm voice, Maia responded
"No you were the on that put your name on the note, I should be angry at you, not the other way round. You were the one that put my name on the note."
At this Catha strode purposefully down the corridor and into her dormitory. Then Maia followed her into the dorm, not because she wanted to apologise to Catha actually apologising was the last thing Maia wanted to but because she had just heard the bell striking telling her to go to the dorms. Then the bell to get changed and then the bell to say your prayers. Then lastly the bell to blow out your candles and go to sleep. But Maia could not sleep, all she was thinking about was how bad she had been to ditch class with Catha. Though she knew she had done it because she was Cathas best friend, so she wrote her a note. It said
I'm so sorry Catha
I didn't mean what I said please forgive me
From your best friend
Maia
She put the note on Catha's bed and then fell fast asleep under her cold, ripped up blanket.
The next morning very early Catha woke Maia up. She sat down on Maia's bed and whispered "Maia I'm sorry about yesterday too but I still haven't told you the real reason I wanted you to ditch class." now Catha started to cry but through her tears she continued "the real reason was because, because the nurse told me I had cancer, incurable cancer" by this time Catha was covered in tears because of this Maia said "Catha I am your best friend and I will be there through whatever happens because I know you will be there too".
Catha reached forward and hugged Maia "I know you will and I will too."
