I flung my backpack over my shoulder, grabbing a piece of toast and holding it in my mouth as I picked up my phone. My mom looked up at me as she leaned over her laptop on the kitchen counter. "I'm late." I said as I shoved my phone into my pocket and took the toast out of my mouth.
"Do you have any plans for tonight?" She asked, standing up. I shook my head and headed for the door.
"Nope. I'll see you this afternoon. Love you, mom." I smiled and left the house. I sighed deeply and hurried down the sidewalk, towards my school which was two blocks away. I pulled out my phone to check the time. I was 18 minutes late. "Shit, shit, shit." I whispered under my breath, staring at my phone. I then stopped walking; I bumped into someone. I dropped my phone and jumped. I leaned down to pick up my phone. "Shit- I'm so so sorry." I sighed, tucking my hair behind my ear and looking up.
There was a man standing there. He had blue hair, reaching just above his shoulder. His piercing dark eyes stared into my soul. I opened my mouth but nothing came out. "It's fine. Where are you headed?" His lips stretched out into a wide smile.
"J-just to school." I stuttered, breaking eye contact and looking down. He looked down at his watch.
"You're a bit late." He said. I nodded slowly. "Well, by this time you've already been marked away. Come with me, tell your parents that it's just because you arrived late." He nodded. I felt chills crawl down my back.
"Uhh- I think I should just go. My mom will lose her shit." I whispered, beginning to walk away from the beautiful stranger. I was stopped when he grabbed hold of my wrist. I sharply turned. "Hey!" I yelled quietly. He let go.
"Come on. I'm going to get pizza." He said. I glanced over at him. "What are you so afraid of?" He smirked. I opened my mouth, choking on the air before giving up and letting him take me to the local pizza store.
We sat down at a table, a big cheese pizza on the table between us. "What's your name?" He asked as I ate slowly.
"Tessa." I said, putting the slice of pizza down.
"I'm Kai. Anderson." He smiled. I slowly dipped my soda. Awkward silence fell over us.
"Well- I really should at least turn up at school for a bit." I said, getting up. "Thanks Kai." I nodded then left quickly.
10:42pm
I didn't end up going to school. I snuck into the house and hurried to my room upstairs where I spent the day. I changed into my silk pajama singlet and shorts when I heard a crinkling sound from my jeans pocket when I took them off. I picked up my jeans and checked. There was a small note in the back pocket. I slowly pulled it out and unfolded it. It was a phone number marked with a 'K'. Kai must've snuck it into my pocket. I went over to my bed, staring at the paper. I sat on my bed and grabbed my phone, typing the number in. I brought myself the courage to send a message.
me hey
kai You found the note.

read 10:47pm.I turned off my phone and put an old oversized sweater over my pajamas, too lazy to find anything else. I slipped on a pair of ankle boots and left my hair out. I hurried down the stairs when my mom stopped me. "Woah, woah woah. Where are you going Tessa?" She asked.
"To Joana's." I blurted out. Joana was my best friend. My mom's mood changed as she smiled.
"Okay, have fun sweetie. I'd rather you come home tomorrow but Sunday's fine too." She nodded. I smiled and nodded before leaving.
I finally got to the park. It was 11 now. It would've been pitch black if it wasn't for the orange street lights. I put my bag down and turned around. "Kai?" I called. No answer. I got out my phone to text him but then I heard a stick break behind me. I sharply turned. Nothing. "Ka-" I called again but suddenly the only thing I could see was darkness.
I woke up to darkness yet again. I couldn't move my arms or my legs. When I tried, it just felt like something was restraining them. I tried to scream but it was muffled. I finally saw light again when what seemed to be a pillow case was removed from my head. I frantically looked around, noticing that I was tied to a chair and there was a piece of fabric tied tightly around my mouth. I tried to scream again when somebody held a rope around my neck from behind, strangling me. I twitched as my vision grew blurry. "Hush." A familiar voice said as the rope was taken away. I blinked slowly, my head spinning. Somebody crouched down in front of me and pull the fabric off my mouth.
"K-Kai?" I choked, barely keeping my eyes open as I gasped for more air. I could see the faint outline of his figure as he placed his hand over mine. My eyes widened as I saw a group of eerie 'clowns' form behind him. He placed a finger over my lips, slowly dragging it down my bottom lip.
"Shhh." He hushed. "You're here now. Safe." He whispered, raising his eyebrows and speaking in a smooth tone. I shook my head, my eyes growing red.
"Who are these people?" I stuttered. They all removed their masks at once.
"Ally, Ivy, Winter, Gary, Beverly-" He began, naming them all. I shook my head.
"No- why are they dressed like that?" I whispered. Kai stood up.
"Ohhh." He scoffed, picking up a strange mask from the floor and placing it over his head. "We're all one. Cult of Kai." He chimed, raising his hands up. He spun back around to face me and removed his mask. "And you're one of us." He pointed.
