                                         The wolf
It's dark out. The stars shine bright up in the sky and the full moon is calling to me. I feel soft dirt under my paws as I quickly climb up the hill by the lake and let out a long howl. Another howl joins me from across the lake. I look out and see a gold colored blur back into the woods and it doesn't come back. I sit on the hill staring into the water at my reflection. A silver haired wolf with piercing eyes.
I wake up in the school infirmary with Jay sitting beside me. He's surprised when I wake up and stands up stammering something about getting the nurse and leaves the room. When he returns the nurse is behind him. She's a short elderly lady with short red hair - obviously dyed - and red glasses around her neck. She pulls out her stethoscope and listens to my heart before shining a light in my eyes. She makes a few notes and suggests I go home for the remainder of the day and asks if I have a ride home. Jay quickly speaks up. "I can drive her home" he says a little too enthusiastically but I let it go. It might not be the best idea for me to drive home at this point. I go to get up and immediately get light headed. I grad Jay's arm to steady myself and I get a flash of a golden furred wolf with bright blue eyes. When I let go I look up at Jay and he stares back at me confused. I gather my things and manage to say "My Jeep is this way" before I half walk half run out the door.
Jay catches up to me before I make it to the double doors leading out to the student parking lot. He grabs my arm and pulls me to a stop and I'm breathing hard. "Are you ok?" He looks worried as he looks into my eyes. I suddenly get the urge to scream at him. Where does he get off being worried about me. He treats me like I'm a prize to win. Instead I look him in the eyes and say very calmly "I'm fine. Can we just go to my car so I can go home already?" I heard a that voice in my head again and this time it spoke behind a dangerous growl. "Meet me at the lake at midnight." I must be losing it. We went to the parking lot and Jay hopped in the drivers side of my Jeep and looked at me with a look that said don't argue. I sighed and jumped in as he started the car. He pulls out of the parking lot and I reach for the AC since it's 104 outside and I turn and stare at Jay. Up close his jaw isn't as sharp as I first thought. It's more rounded and his cheek bones aren't as defined as I first thought either. He has long eyelashes and his lips look soft. He has a cleft chin and his eyes aren't all blue. There's a little green ring around the inside and flecks of silver. Jay looks over at me and I hear this love growl in me head again. I blurt out "Can you stop doing that!?" He looks surprised. "What am I doing?" He asks. "That damn growling crap. Stop doing that!" He laughs and tells me that's not him. "It's your wolf." He replies calmly. I sit there confused. I don't understand.
I sit through the rest of the car ride trying to figure out what he means by that and when we pull up to my house he hops out and opens my door for me. I climb out slowly and look up at him and he closes the door behind me. "Thanks for the ride." I look around realizing he will either have to take my car or walk and I get red in the face a little. He turns and starts walker mag down the road and I yell after him. "You can take my Jeep if you come pick me up in the morning for school." He looks back and smiles but tosses me the keys and tell me "I don't need them. You don't either." He turns and runs off down the road. He disappears around the corner. I turn and head inside.
I open the door and my mom is already crushing me with one of her hugs. She rushes me up stairs to my room and has me lay down in bed. She brings me a bowl of soup and tells me to take it easy. She leaves me alone and I sit in bed flipping through channels when a voice pops in my head again. "Don't forget. The lake. Tonight. Don't be late." I jump out of bed and look around the room frantically thinking I must be going insane. I lay down in bed and get ready to go to sleep. Before I pass out an image of a silver wolf flashed in my head and the world faded to black.
I'm sitting on the edge of a lake. It's dark out. My feet are dangling in the water. It's quiet and peaceful. I have no idea how I got her so I must still be dreaming. I look out on the water as the moon is reflecting across the lake. I hear a low deep growl coming from behind me and I turn and stand quickly and I find myself face to face with the biggest wolf I've ever seen. It's fur is jet black and eyes the color of blood. I can't move. I thought I was dreaming but this must be a nightmare. I turn and run as fast as I can. I start running faster and faster. I hear the wolf chasing me and a voice in my head speaks telling me to go into the woods. I'm a few hundred yards away and I make a sharp left and duck between the trees. I've never ran this fast and yet I can still run faster. I speed up and the voice in my head give me directions and I follow them all the way to the top of a cliff. I skid to a stop and look down the sheer 100 foot drop. The voice in my head tells me to jump but I'm standing here frozen. The wolf catches up to me and I turn as the wolf stalks back and forth. It comes closer with each passing moment and my heart is beating harder and harder. The wolf lunges at me and I see him coming down. A flash of gold streaks past me and a wolf stopped the black one from hitting me. They stand in front of me. The gold one between me and the black wolf. I new voice enters my head. I can tell it's Jay. "Jump!" He yells. I turn and jump.
