Anika held a small flashlight in one hand and the end of the blanket that was pushing us all together in the other. As we crossed the cold kitchen floor her dog Max barked at the window rapidly. Her little brother Ashton was clinging to my side his eyes darting from one side of him to the other. I nudged Anika and she whipped her head around, annoyed.
"What!?" She whispers shouted.
"Ashton's really scared." "So?" "So we should bring him back upstairs. And I can stay with him or something." "No." "Why?" "Because I don't want to be alone in the middle of a storm at 12 am." "True. But you're dog will be with you." "My dog? Will run out of the room at the first sign of danger." I looked over at him. He was cowering behind the sofa. *sigh* "Fine." "Thank you." She said absentmindedly.... "Don't worry," I reassured her. It can't end like this. I thought. I obviously didn't want it to end like this. And it obviously didn't. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here writing this right now. Anika walked forward and then stopped suddenly. "What the hell was that!?" "Shhh!" Ashton was almost crying and her dog, Max was beginning to growl at the window.
"Grace?" "Yes Ash?" "I'm scared." He said between hiccups. "I know," I said, forcing a small smile. "I know you are but it's going to be ok. I promise." "You don't know that it's gonna be ok!"
