"Nicki...Nicki...Nicki wake up!"
"Huh?" I moan as my eyes flutter open.
It's Taylor Simons, my best friend since 3rd grade. "Come on! We're going to be late!"
"5 more minutes" I plead.
"Nope" she says stubbornly, as she pulls me up out of bed by the arms. I yawn and slowly get out of bed. Taylor, being the neat freak she always has been makes up my bed as I throw on some clothes. Like Taylor I have to wear a boring school uniform, plaid skirt, collared shirt, and a tie. I've always been a little jealous of Taylor, her long blonde hair, green eyes. She could flirt with any guy and they'd be almost charmed by her magical spell.
"Why don't you let me fix your hair?" Taylor offers, she never fails to.
"I don't know..."
"Oh come on, I can put it in a French braid! Like I did for dinner at the country club last week, you loved it!" Taylor convincingly adds.
She was right. I did like the way my hair looked that night at the club. Plus she was amazing at doing hair, I was always her guanine pig, she could practice different hairstyles on my hair for hours. I didn't mind, I just never kept them in.
"Fine" I give in.
She eyes my dark roots, sternly, as she walks over.
As she brushes my long, brown hair, I put on my new hoop earrings that Taylor and I had bought together last weekend.
"Nicki!" My mother yells from downstairs. "Coming!" I yell as Taylor ties the hair tie at the end of my braid and we run down stairs, together. "Good morning girls!" my mother says, cheerfully. "Good morning Mrs. VanDerson!" Taylor replies, mocking her cheerful tone. I jealously eye my mother, who is still wearing her bath robe, getting ready for a day of lounging around the house.
My mother turns around with our plates of toast in her hands and passes them to us. "Nicole, you look like a hooker! Take out those earrings, now!" She says, sternly. "But Mo-"
"No buts!" She says, pointing to the stair case. I stomp up the stairs and quickly take out the new hoop earrings and replace them with them with the little stud earrings my grandmother had bought me for my 14th birthday.
When I enter the dining room for the second time this morning, Taylor had already finished her toast. I quickly munch on mine and gulp down my orange juice. "Girls, we are going to the country club for dinner tonight!" My mother informs us. "Dad's flying in from California, Nicki" she adds. I nearly spit out my juice. "That's today?!" I squeal. My mother nods. My father had been on a business trip for 2 months now, I have been counting down the days until he got home, but some how I had forgotten that today was the big day. "Now go on to school, you too don't want to be late, again!" My mother says, emphasizing on the word "again". Taylor and I have been late multiple times this year.
When I get up I brush the leftover crumbs off of my plaid skirt. Taylor heads over to the hallway mirror and fixes her tie. "I hate these stupid uniforms" she mumbles. "Ugh, I know. They're so scratchy, plaid is so..." I stop. "...100 years ago?" Taylor finishes. "Totally!" I snicker. We both giggle at how snobby we sound because trust me, we are so not like that even though our parents and half of Twain's Catholic Private School can be. "No but seriously, we better get going" I say. "Okay Ms. Serious" Taylor laughs as she grabs her car keys.
"So how's Nate?" Taylor asks while turning the key in the ignition. Nate has been my boyfriend since I was 13.
"Great!"
Taylor sighs happily.
"What?" I ask
"I'm just happy for you! Can't I be happy for my best friend?"
"Course you can!" I laugh.
"Good!" She smiles, turning up the radio and we both sing along.

"Hey babe" Nate says as he pulls me into a hug. I give him a quick peck on the lips after he loosens his grip.
"Aww the love birds" Taylor coos.
"Come on Tay, let's go" I say giving Nate one last hug.
"So after school do you want to-" I start.
"OW" I yelp as someone rams into my shoulder. I look up from my scattered books to see a familiar face. Max, no wait, Matt...yeah that's it. What a douche bag. But he doesn't even stop to help me pick up my books, he just keeps walking down the hall with his friends, laughing along to something somebody must have said.
"Are you okay?!" Taylor asks as she helps me pick up my books.
"Yeah. Fine." I reply as I get up and notice a few bystanders. I glare at them and they quickly look away as if nothing had ever happened.
"Do you know who that was?" She asks.
Not letting me answer, she continues on.
"That was Matt Espinosa"
I give her a look, but she ignores it.
"He's so hot!" She goes on.
"But he's a douche." I mutter.
"But he's hot!"
But he's a douche." I repeat, completely unfazed.
"Nicki, let it go, it was probably an accident"
"But he could have helped me with my books" I say, under my breath.
Clearly Taylor heard me because she rolled her eyes again.
"So what were you saying about after school?" Taylor asks. "Oh right! Want to go to the mall?" I ask. "Duh! You know, I really need to get spring clothes, I have nothing!"
