The Graylace family is an ancient bloodline known for their mysterious behavior and their role as Keepers of the Artifacts and the Masters of Fate. Their head of house has always been a man contracted to the chain, Fate, and is sentenced with protecting several powerful artifacts from those who might use them for ill. Many died at the Tragedy of Sablier but those who survived continued to protect the objects even with the sudden refusal of Fate to make any contracts. When two of the family members thought to have died at Sablier, Anne and her elder brother Oswyn, returned from Abyss, things changed. They both came of age and Fate chose to contract a woman, Anne, for the first time in history. She was to become the next head of house after Sebastian Graylace stepped down. She was to change everything.
Chains of Silver Lace
Chapter 1: Truth
Walking briskly down the hall behind Reim, her steps silent, she brushed her gloved fingers along the fine silver bracelet she wore with a soft sigh. Her sapphire eyes narrowed as she saw a particularly familiar sleeve reach out from behind a door and pull Reim inside. Break. It was good he had returned, after all, she had been a bit worried for him and Gilbert, but what was he doing now? She paused outside the now closed door, leaning against the wall to wait. She could hear them talking but wished not to interrupt.
"Wh-who is it?" She heard Reim ask, although he truly should have known, "Xerxes! ... Sir Gilbert!"
"Pipe down," echoed the quiet yet familiar voice of her friend, "I overworked him a bit. Let him rest for now."
They'd been at Pandora together for quite some time. His voice was unmistakable.
"Overworked? He used Raven?" Reim questioned. She heard Break coughing through the door and winced.
"Yes. It was the only way we could come back here."
"Hey, are you all right?" Reim's most recent question made her close her eyes, knowing full well the answer.
"I'm fine," came Break's lie. Right on cue. There was a split second of a pause before he continued, "Tell me. Did something happen to Miss Sharon?"
She grimaced, listening. Sharon, missing? It was not a good thing. As Reim rambled on, she moved a bit to the side. His realization that he was wasting time game quickly and he bolted out the door. She slipped in behind him.
"What a noisy person," Break commented with another cough, right as she entered. She closed the door quietly behind her.
"Xerxes Break," she whispered, walking up behind him as he slammed the teacup down and exclaimed that Oz's appearance in the conference was a diversion. "Would you kindly allow me to assist you in finding Miss Sharon?"
"Ah. Anne Graylace. No, no. You are needed here. You should help deal with Oz and Alice," The hatter stated, moving to leave the room.
"When you return from saving Miss Sharon then, Break, I would ask to speak with you. It is nothing urgent so please, carry on with the task at hand," She said with a gentle smile and a slightly bow, "I will be eagerly awaiting the return of both you and Miss Sharon. In one piece, preferably."
Break looked at her for a moment with that inscrutable gaze of his before nodding and leaving the room. She left, leaving the door open behind her as she went to find Oz and Alice. Following the conclusion of the incident, she wandered into a room and sat on the couch by the window to wait for Break. She knew he would bring Miss Sharon back safely. He would bring her back. Fixing a strand of her glossy black hair, done neatly into a Victorian-Esque updo, she closed her eyes. A few minutes later, she heard something creaking open. Standing up, she smoothed her black skirt and looked at the door with a calm expression. It turned deadpan as she realized no one was there and almost robotically turned her head to look at the cabinet where the teapot was set. A red eye was looking back at her. Laughter followed as Break exited, finding himself so entertaining, while Anne simply stood there with yet another sigh.
