Sophie's POV
My ears ring with the beeping of my alarm clock, causing me to open my eyes. Soft sunlight drifts through the curtains with a soft breeze that dances across my skin. My fingers twist the silver ring on my right ring finger. I've had it for as long as I can remember. But I can't remember where it came from.
I lift my head of my pillows and swing my legs off my bed before I can get too comfortable in the nest of blankets I created while I was asleep. Slowly standing up, I look over to the calendar hanging on the wall over my desk. Saturday, April twenty-seventh. My fifty-fourth birthday I smirk at the calendar now swinging in the breeze.
I go over to my bathroom and take a long refreshing shower, waking me up completely. When I'm out with a towel around me I look into the mirror. Wet brown hair, usually hanging in loose brown curls, but now hanging limply at my bare shoulders, striking green eyes glazing over my appearance. Slightly tanned skin with a dusting of freckles over the small, slightly pointed nose. Prominent cheekbones, slimming my face down to the chin. Slim pink lips, open somewhat to reveal straight white teeth with two that are elongated only a little and pointed sharply at the end. An eighteen year old's appearance that I could never be mad about.
I sigh and walk back into my bedroom. I drop the now damp towel on the floor and put on a simple white V-neck t-shirt, a pair of dark skinny jeans, and my red converse. Running a brush quickly through my hair I grab my bag, which is immediately slung over my shoulder, shove my phone into my pocket, and grab my favorite red sash, that I use as a headband, before going out the door and locking it.
In the hallway I don't run into any of the other girls who stay in this dorm building. It's too early for any of them to be up. I jog down a flight of stairs then out the door to the parking lot where my dark green Jeep Wrangler awaits me. The car of my dreams is mine, and I will never let it get away from me. Aside from the car, Drew, my best friend, is the only thing that is important to me in this little town of Keaton, Maine. I'm just your normal high school student. Well, except for the fact that I'm only half human, I'm pretty sure that's not normal.
I reach my destination in no time, pulling into a parking spot just a little ways away from the entrance. It's a little cafe in between an office building and an apartment building on Green Street, which is pretty much the busiest street in this little town. Outside of my car, I'm overwhelmed by the scents of the delicious treats coming from the shop. Cinnamon rolls, biscuts, cupcakes, muffins, and an array of other mouth-watering smells call to me. Yet, other scents, ones that don't pertain to the pastries of the shop invade my senses.
The bitter smell of unhappiness, the sweet smell of happiness, thick and musty of lust, salty of envy. Scents of blood floating in the air, taunting my inner thirst. But I can't give into the tantalizing meals everywhere. Sometimes having half of a blood-sucking creature be my nature is a little more than annoying.
I go into the cafe and smile when the person behind the counter greets me with a quick hello. The walls of the establishment are a beige color that reminds me of my own skin. The walls lead down to a dark brown hardwood floor that hardly has a scratch on it from great maintenance. And everywhere in the room there are small metal tables with matching chairs that have royal blue cushions on them. I spot Drew's scruffy blonde hair at our usual table and head over.
"Good morning Sophie." He says as I sit down at the table where there is already a cinnamon roll and a steaming mug of hot chocolate waiting for me. "You're early." He closes the book that he has in his hands and shoves it into his bag.
I drop my own bag at my feet as I snort at him. "Of course I am. But you always seem to be here even earlier." I take a large bite of my roll and continue to talk, "What inspires you to get up so early on a Saturday morning?"
