(Picture of Kat on the side)
Kat has always been sad. She's not depressed, but there was always something missing. She never had friends growing up for various reasons. The only person she ever bonded with just disappeared one morning. And all she ever was to her mother was a huge disappointment.
And every sad person creates at least one beautiful thing in their lifetime. And Kat did just that.
It was 9th grade, still no friends. She was sitting in English class wanting to commit a mass homicide, when something caught her attention.
"Now, we highly recommend everyone try to find a club they fit into. The list is hung on the class board just outside." He teacher said in a completely monotone voice. The old bat had finnaly said something worth remembering.
Kat quickly scribbled "No friends club" into her book and packed up her stuff. She spent the whole lunch designing a sheet for her club.
The next day she sat quickly under a big oak tree eating her bland ham sandwich.
"Is this the No friends club?" A quiet voice asked. Kat looked up to see a girl dressed in all black with long, wild brown hair. Her eyes seemed really familiar, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
"Yeah..." She said as the girl sat down.
"This is brilliant, you know." The girl said eating a handful of almonds.
"Really?" Kat asked, shocked.
"Yeah. Just brilliant. The whole staff board put together isn't smart enough to think of something like this. You're really smart." The girl said popping an almond into her mouth.
"Thank you.... I don't believe I caught your name." Kat asked. It was the first time she had been complimented in her entire 14 years of life.
"Ellie. But people just call me the wanderer." She said. Then it hit her, why she was so familiar that is. She remembered listening to some seniors talking about her.
She remembered a girl say something like "Yeah, it's like her 24th school or something."
And the other responding with "Wait, which one is it again?" And then proceeding to light her cigarette.
"The one with really big eyes." She had answered.
"Wait.... The brown eyed one or the blue eyes one?" The other one said.
"The brown eyed one." Was the last thing she remembered hearing.
"I've heard about you." Kat remarked.
"Everyone has." She answered.
"Do you think more people with join?" Kat asked hopefully.
"Heaps. I'm telling you, this Is the start to something amazing."
And Ellie was right. As the club grew, so did Kat's happiness. These people became her family, the only people she ever trusted. These people would save her life, change her. She would fall in love, and her heart would break. This club became her life, a responsibility. And she loved that. She finally had a purpose.
"Kat, I think you and I are going to become great friends." Ellie said giving her a big smile.
Kat smiled and the two girls spent that lunch laughing at stupid puns and telling stories. It was like they were meant to meet. There was this connection that Kat never felt with anyone else. Even years later, she never loved someone in this way.
The bell rang and they stood up.
"See you tomorrow?" Kat questioned.
"Most definitely." Ellie said giving a grin.
They both spent the next two periods happy as ever. Kat was beyond excited to tell her mum about her new friend. She practically skipped home. For the first time, she actually appreciated the country side of England were she was raised. She noticed the beautiful rolling hills and pretty little weeds that lined the damaged fences.
"Hi mum." Kat said dropping her patched old backpack on the floor.
"Hello." Her mother said sharply as she stirred a pot of some sort if unpleasant looking stew.
"Guess what?" Kat said eagerly.
"Look Kat if it isn't important don't say it I'm trying to focus here." Her mum responded.
"I made a friend." Kat said.
Her mother dropped the wooden spoon and turned around.
"Pardon?" She said. She had a look on her face that Kat had never seen.
"I made a friend. Her name is Ellie." Kat said.
"Well, you should go spend time with this Ellie." Her mother said. It was to good to be true. Finally a reason for Kat to get out of the house and away from her.
"I'll ask tomorrow." She said bounding to her room.
Ellie walked down the old road to a big old farm house with a raised porch. She lived under that house. She had an old beaten mattress and some blankets. See, Ellie is homeless. She travels through the UK finding schools and places to stay. She leaves every time her hiding spot is discovered. She crawls under the house and puts her backpack down. She decides to find Kat. She knows where everyone lives. Not in a creepy way, she just knows all the houses because a of when she was looking for places to sleep.
She walks up to the small red door and knocks loudly. No one opens the door, but she can hear yelling from Inside. Ellie knocks again and a large, angry woman opens the door.
"What'ya want?!" She yells.
"I-"
"Mum its Ellie it's fine." She says.
"Well you and Ellie should go play now." She said hiding her anger.
"C'mon." Kat said stepping out the door and walking down the road.
Ellie could see a bruise sprouting on Kat's cheek.
"What happened?" Ellie questioned.
"I just fell... I'm fine. No big deal." Kat said.
"Ok...." Ellie didn't believe a word of it, but everyone has their secrets. For example, Ellie lives under a damn farm house.
"So...what's your favourite colour?" Kat asked breaking the scilence.
"Grey, like fog." Ellie responded
"I like blue." Kat said trying to think of a convorsation topic.
"Do you belive in heaven, Kat?" Ellie said out of the blue.
"I guess." she said picking up a stone and tossing it. "Do you?"
"No. It's just a thought someone made up to make death seem less painful." Ellie responded.
"Where do you think we go when we die?" Kat asked.
"I don't know. The only people that know are the dead." She said sighing.
"Hey by the way, want to stay at my place tonight?" Kat asked.
"Sure." Ellie answered, and the two turned around and headed home.
