REAL LIFE

ELEVEN MONTHS EARLIER:
8th december
2:28am

AS HEAVY RAIN FELL UPON THE ROOF OF THE CAR, A PLETHORA OF LA LIGHTS SHONE THROUGH THE WINDOWS. Intoxicated crowds of young adults were lining the pavements of Rodeo, not at all phased by the torrential downpour that was sure to give them all a case of the flu. The music that played through the car contrasted greatly against the echoed sounds of that spilling out of the nightclubs, and when she saw a group of girls huddled under their coats, most likely waiting for an Uber, July was suddenly grateful for the heat that David's car was providing.

She smiles softly out of the window, head resting against her palm as a new song starts to play - one of her favourites. Absentmindedly, she plays with David's hand, the one that'd moved to rest on her thigh around ten minutes into their midnight drive. The two exist in a comfortable silence for a significant stretch of time, with no need for conversation as they took in the atmosphere that LA's nightlife produced.

"I love nights like this." July's soft voice pierced through the silence as she pushed her fingers through David's and squeezed gently. "The rain makes it so much nicer."

David, flicking the car into autopilot, glances over at his girlfriend and quirks his brows. There was a hint of teasing in his eyes, but also a morsel of seriousness. His black cap casted a shade over his face, but the way his lips twitched into a smile was still obvious. "You're not supposed to be talking, babe. You're supposed to be trying to sleep."

July smiles sheepishly, pulling their entwined hands up to rest on her cheek as he turns his attention back to the road, taking control of the vehicle once again. She watches him for a while, eyes gradually growing heavy as the minutes ticked by. David takes it upon himself to gently move their entwined hands across her cheek, a comforting habit that he knew always helped the insomniac find her sleepy place.

Letting her eyes flick over to read the time that flashed on the Tesla's screen one last time, July finally succumbed to the world of sleep, eyes closing and head gently moving to rest upon the window as she fell into a deep slumber. When her hand fell from David's and came to rest on her lap, David glances over at her and sighs in relief, laughing quietly to himself as he flicked on his indicator and turned the car around, finally heading home.

It was almost 3am when David walked into the house with July curled up in his arms, still fast asleep. By the time they were both tucked into bed, with July cuddled up to David's chest, she'd come around just enough to glance up at him sleepily. "I love you so much, David."

And David, exhausted, smiles lazily and rests his lips against her forehead. "I love you too, you little midnight princess."

With a small smile on her lips, July snuggled against his warm body and, within a matter of minutes, the pair were entwined and sleeping soundly, with July dreaming of Paris and David dreaming of July.
