It is Thanksgiving Day and Kenna is freaking out. She's going through all the bad scenarios that could happen at this dinner.
Kenna goes into the bathroom and showers to distract herself from her own thoughts. When she gets out, she throws on her robe and walks into her bedroom. Kenna scans her closet and decides on ripped blue jean skinny jeans and a red sweater. She then throws on her brown combat boots and stomps down the stairs.
"Good morning", greets her mom, "Did you shower?"
"Yeah", responds Kenna, "Is that okay?"
"Yeah", answers her mom, "I'm gonna go sit down and enjoy this coffee before I start cooking."
"Okay", Kenna replies as she pours a bowl of cereal.
...
It is now 11am and Kenna is in the kitchen helping her mom with all the preparation of the food. While doing this, she is watching the clock and counting down the minutes until Patrick comes over.
"Stop worrying", Kenna's mom reassures, "Everything's going to be fine."
"Yeah", Kenna responds, "You say that now.... but as soon as he comes you'll be asking thousands of questions and dad will be glaring at him."
"You've seen too many movies", her mom informs, "That's not gonna happen."
"You're right", Kenna agrees, "Dad will be glaring while asking tons of questions of what Patrick's intentions are and what his plans for the future are while you will be sweet and sit back and watch dad interrogate him enjoying every bit because it's one less thing you have to do to Patrick because if Patrick slips up and sounds or acts horrible to me, whether on accident or not, you will throw him out."
"That sounds more accurate." Kenna's mom agrees while chuckling to herself.
"It's not funny." Kenna responds.
...
It is 12pm and Kenna and her mom have finished making all the food and setting the table.
Kenna is cleaning up herself when she hears a knock at the door. Her dogs run to the door barking and jumping hysterically. Her mom holds the dogs back while Kenna opens the door and welcomes Patrick.
"Hey", Patrick addresses to Kenna as steps inside.
"Hey", Kenna responds as her dad enters the foyer.
"Happy Thanksgiving", Patrick addresses to Kenna's parents.
Patrick finally looks at the dogs and mentions how much he loves dogs. So Kenna's mom let's one go at a time so he can get used to their anxiousness.
A few minutes later, everyone's piled into the dining room and taking a seat at the table. Kenna's dad and mom are seated at the end, while Jenna sits on one side and Kenna and Patrick sit side by side opposite of Jenna.
After everyone gets their food on their plates and begins eating, the interrogating also begins....
"So Patrick....", Kenna's dad begins, "Are you in any sports?"
"No", Patrick responds, "Why?"
"Just curious", her dad continues, "Do you do any extracurriculars?"
"No", Patrick answers.
"Do you have a job?", her dad pushes.
"Dad...." Kenna interupts, "Really?"
"Yes really", her dad answers, "I want to know what he does."
"It's fine Kenna", Patrick assures, "No I don't have a job."
"Then how can you afford that Harley outside?"
"Well if you must know", Patrick says, "my dad has a job that pays him a lot of money which makes me get things I want without working for it."
Kenna's dad stops talking and eating and just glares at Patrick for what seems to be for eternity.
Eventually he says, "Wow boy. You have a lot of guts for answering me the way you did."
"Well as I see it", Patrick continues, "I answered it truthfully and you probably wanted me to answer that way to give you a reason to tell Kenna how you don't approve."
At this point everyone had finished with their meal and Kenna and her mom were looking at each other with shock for how the conversation had become.
"I want you out of my house." Kenna's dad declares, "Now."
Patrick gets up from his seat and starts walking to the door, followed by Kenna going after him.
"You don't have to leave", Kenna states as she stands in the foyer while Patrick puts his coat on.
"It's pretty clear I'm not wanted." Patrick says as he opens the door.
Kenna's dad has entered the foyer to see Patrick out of his house.
"I'll talk to you later", Patrick says before leaving.
Kenna's dad shuts the door behind Patrick and locks it.
"I like that boy", her dad declares, "He's got guts. Perfect for you. Both of you have that attitude which will make for an interesting relationship.
He then walked into the family room and plopped down on the couch to continue watching football
"If you liked him so much then why did you throw him out?!" Kenna questions as she follows after him.
"Because I wanted him to think I didn't like him."
"Why?"
"You don't need to know why. All you do need to know is that I approve and that is all he needs to and ever will know."
"Fine."
