Veronica's POV

"Noah let's go inside the red rain will be falling soon!" I yelled out to my little brother. The red rain was definitely something we didn't want to get caught up in. We call it the red rain because it's rain but it's the color of blood and it burns the skin like acid.

Noah was running around with our dog Nuka. When he heard what I said he stopped and looked up at the sky, and saw the redish greyish clouds forming. He was disappointed but he did what I said and ran towards the bomb shelter we'd been living in the past year.

We found this shelter because of Nuka actually. Noah and I were on our own for awhile. We lost our parents and had been staying with our aunt. Things were bad the world was going through some pretty crazy shit. Strange and scary natural disasters struck down homes cities burned states flooded people were dying everywhere. Than some weird virus out break that seemingly came out of nowhere caused people to become violently sick. Those who were infected would turn into these mindless dead flesh eating things. Some people called them zombies. I used to watch movies about zombies I'd always laugh and make fun of the stupid survivors whenever they did something dumb. Never in million years did I think that a zombie Apocalypse would actually happen and that I would be a stupid survivor. But there I was with my Aunt and my kid brother waiting on the other side of the city where the people in charge were checking to see if people were infected. They found that my aunt was sick and decided to put her into quarantine. I quickly realized that quarantine wasn't to help those who were sick but to kill them.

I decided to take Noah and leave the city for good. We found ourselves in some weird little suburban town just outside the city. We stopped at a few houses that looked somewhat safe I always made Noah stay in the locked car and told him to hide under the seats. I would take the metal baseball bat that belonged to our dad and would bravely or stupidly (depending on how people would view it) charge into these hopefully empty homes looking for food and supplies. I never checked the little convenient stores because I figured those places were emptied out by other survivors, and were probably surrounded by walkers. Once I felt we had found enough supplies we went on our way to find a place to bunker down.

It was hard I couldn't trust anything. So we just kind of lived out in our aunts car. One day Noah was playing outside when some scruffy little pit bull came sauntering out of the woods. I was scared it would attack him so I ran into the car to grab the bat, but when I turned back around I found the two playing on the ground the dog seemed friendly enough. It was the first time in a long time that I have seen my kid brother so damn happy. "Ronni can we keep him please?" I remember him asking me with the sweetest puppy dog eyes and goofy little grin on his face. Who could say no to that face. So we had a dog we had to take care of. A few days later when I was starting to give up hope that we'd ever find a place and we'd have to live out of my aunts car for the rest of our lives Nuka, we named him, started barking like crazy and ran into the woods.

Noah screaming for Nuka to come back runs after him. "Noah wait get back here now!" I yell after my at the time 7yr old  brother. But to no avail he was too far gone to hear me so I go running in after him praying that neither of us runs into a walker. After what felt like hours of running through the woods looking for my kid brother and our stray dog, but was really about five minutes, I see a clearing right up ahead. I hear Noah laughing and Nuka barking. I made it out into the clearing only to see a big army bomb shelter smack dead in the middle of a huge field.

I cautiously made my way inside and looked around. The place was huge and empty. And it had an underground bunker there were beds, well more like cots, and pillows and blankets. There were bathrooms with working showers and working toilets. There was a kitchen and a living room type area. There were cabinets full of canned foods and dry foods. And there was a weapons room guns hanging on the walls like decorations, army knives and daggers scattered over the tabletop, boxes of bullets sitting on the floor, I got chills down my spine just looking at them. Hopefully I will never have to use them I think to myself. It seemed like the perfect place to live. So that's what we did.

Anyway flashback over about a year later we are still in the shelter. I run over to the metal water purifier on the side of the shelter and get some fresh water in a huge pale so we have some drinking water. I don't know how long the red rain is going to last. I take the pale and I run inside closing the huge metal door and locking it behind me.

About ten minutes later we hear the familiar pitter patter of rain hitting the huge metal shelter. Noah sits beside the window and stares into the distance with a longing look on his face. I know this look. Noah hates being cooped up in this place he often refers to it as a prison. He wants so badly to be able to explore the outside world, but it's too dangerous. There are so many ways I could lose him and I just can't let that happen. I am willing to do whatever it takes to keep my brother alive even if it kills me.
