Skin walker, or a Deer?

I'm a Canadian prairie girl, I've lived in the prairies my whole life, and being an Empath I've heard, seen and felt some weird things in my years. But this is in my top five for weirdest shit to ever happen to me, and I'll probably never forget this.

It was during the week after my birthday, so it's autumn, and cold. I went for a late night walk with one of my very good friends to Tim Horton's, and we brought her dog. Her dog is usually a good girl, and we like to let her off her leash but she likes to chase the wildlife or the odd stray cat, and one time, a skunk. But we have a successful walk there, purchase our coffees and a doughnut each, but things start to get weird on our walk back. The air feels thicker, but I try not to think too much about it, assuming that maybe it's just my asthma over reacting to the lack of oxygen in the cold air, as we continue our 35 minute walk home we joke, eat our doughnuts, and catch up seeing as she's been attending school and I've just been focusing on work.

We were a little more than half way down the street we walk down nearly every other night, roughly about 20 minutes into our return walk, and I stop and turn to her questioning where her dog is, it's been a while since I'd seen her and I knew she was on my left, because I didn't see her run across the street or hear the jingle of her collar chain, like I usually would. But I didn't know where she was. I glanced up and for some reason my eyes focused on a speed limit sign stating a bold 30 maximum.

My friend whistles, she has a very unique and broken whistle, but the dog didn't come like she usually does any other time. I notice that it suddenly seems like the world gets intensely quite, the silence was deafening yet I could feel the freezing wind, and my fear kicked up along with my anxiety sky rocketing. So we prepared to whistle at the same time, hoping that would be able to get the dog to respond.

Her broken whistle and my strong whistle I've always used to get a dogs attention, including this ones, has always worked, but still she didn't come, my friend and I made eye contact and I could see the worry in her eyes even with the dim street lights. We walked up a bit more thinking maybe she ran into the school yard not that far from us when we weren't looking. She usually responds to noises and the area we're in picks up echos really well, and I've gotten a pattern down that I use for her and she usually comes running. I snapped my fingers on my right hand twice and tapped my right boot on the ground five times to get her to come to us, but it didn't work, just like the whistles.

We saw a Doe run across the short street we were on, and almost looked like it was hiding beside the schools chain link fence, but facing the street, and looking at the other side of the street where she came from, we keep walking, it's not the first time we've walked passed a deer, but this time the doe hissed at us. It sounded like a cat hiss and my heart sank, something wasn't right. Deer's don't make noises like that, so we back up and I keep looking at it.

My attention is stolen by hearing our dogs pounding foot steps and jingling chain, I look to my left and here comes our dog running in the opposite direction, this was not the first time she's ran back not seeing us at first, but usually she only runs back a bit then it dawns on her that we're not that far back, but she keeps running, and then we see this towering male deer.

I glance from the male deer to the doe, and the doe bends its front left hoof in the wrong direction with a disgusting snap, and I notice it's pointing to where our dog ran, the male deer starts to take off after our dog, and my best friend lets out a chilling, soul shaking, and heart breaking scream, exclaiming out "No!" to the point that I can still hear it ringing in my ears to this day when I think about it. We take after the deer and we throw our cups of nearly empty coffee at it, anything to get it's attention away from our dog. But the cups didn't work, so I slip off my slightly loose steel toe construction boot off of my left foot and chuck it as hard as I can at it's head.

It's head snapped a 180 with a disturbing crack to look back at me, staring at me in disgust and that gave my friend enough time to scoop up her dog and run, which is exactly what I had wanted, I thought I was going to die, I hollered out. "We'll never bother you again." And that "We'll put her on the leash from now on, you have my word." I tried to stand tall even though I was terribly scared and felt like I'd throw up any second now, it came closer to me still looking at me like I was scum, I felt it's gross hot rotting flesh scented breath against my face, but it didn't attack, I either blacked out from fear or it made me black out, because the next thing I remember is my best friend at my side trying to wake me up as I lay on the cold concrete, I asked her what happen, and she said that the thing just, left and I had just collapsed.

I don't know why they didn't kill me when it could have, I don't know why it didn't go after my friend, I don't know why it didn't kill our dog when it had the chance, I don't truly know why they spared us, or what we even saw, and I really don't know why the hell it screwed up my left boot that I threw at it, but left my right boot alone. I suppose it wants me to keep it as a memory to not fuck with them anymore, or to keep our dog on a leash.
