CHAPTER 2

Flashback - 12 years ago

“Now girls,” their mother looked down at them with stern but proud eyes, “I want you to stick together today, okay? Play together and don’t let anyone give you any trouble. Understand/”

“Yes, Mummy,’ the young duo looked up at their mother in adoration as she spoke to them by the school gates. It was their first day of school and they couldn’t be more excited to finally begin.

“I’m going to miss you girls today. There’ll be nobody to keep me company in the house anymore… I’ll come by to pick you up later when school’s over, okay? I love you!”

“We love you, too,” they chorused, giving their mother one last good-bye hug.

“Have fun!” she called after them as they skipped away towards the building.

Hand in hand, Crystal with her frilly pink dress and Scarlett with her flowy yellow skirt and white t-shirt ran in the direction of their classroom. The girls did absolutely everything together. Starting school was just another addition to the ever-growing, endless list of things they purposely and subconsciously partnered for.

“Cris? Are you scared?” Scarlett’s voice was low and worried as she whispered in her sister’s ear.

“No. Are you?”

“What if none of the other kids like me? What if all they all leave me alone or you find another friend to play dolls with?”

“Scar, you’re my sister. If nobody likes you then I still will. You are my bestest friend,” the little five years hugged her ‘bestest’ friend tighter than she ever had before. She then took Scarlett’s hand in her tiny one and ran with her now grinning sister, heading for the group of children in the playground opposite the classroom.

End of flashback

“SCARLETT! WHERE ARE MY SHOES?” Crystal’s voice carried throughout the house from her room on the second floor.

“You own a thousand different pairs. Be more specific," she called out from her own room.

Scarlett sat opposite her mirror, carefully applying a layer of black/brown, waterproof mascara to her already thick lashes to add extra volume. The white painted wood door burst open startling her, causing her to smear the mascara on her eyelid. An angry looking Crystal stood behind her in the mirror as retrieved a makeup removal wipe to get rid of the smudge before it dried.

“The new shoes that I bought last weekend you smartass! I’m pretty sure you know the ones, seen as you were there when I bought them. Also, you’re wearing them!!” she yelled the last bit.

“You never said I couldn’t,” Scarlett replied nonchalantly

“I never said you could!”

Once upon a time these girls were close. Sisterly. Best friends. Always getting along. You might ask ‘what happened?’ High school happened. Now they fought over things as simple as a new pair of silver gladiator sandals.

“You are so frustrating!” Crystal boomed.

“Aw thank you. I wish I could say the same, but the phrase I prefer you use is ‘pain in the freaking ass’,” receiving a glare from Crystal that she got through the reflection in the mirror, she continued, “Fine, fine. Calm down, I’ll take them off,”

Folding herself over on the chair she was sitting on, Scarlett purposefully took her time unbuckling the shoes before slipping them off her feet and drooping them on the cold, grey tiles at Crystal’s feet.
