It wasn't uncommon for Sheng Zhe to have nightmares. Not soon after he had moved in, he had suffered the painful, reminiscent trauma, and Yi Jie had to deal with it.
It got easier as time went on. Sheng Zhe was comforted by Yi Jie beside him, and it became unusual for a nightmare to strike.
But it only took one bad day, or, if Yi Jie was in a bad mood. Little things triggered his memory like that, forced him to think about it until it haunted his dreams.
Sheng Zhe tried hard to forget the face of the man. One night, his mother's boyfriend was tasked with looking after him.
He was put to bed early, but Sheng Zhe was too scared to fall asleep. Even at nine-years-old, he could tell something was wrong with his mom's boyfriend. The way he looked at him... didn't feel right. It made Sheng Zhe sleepless, and he laid under his covers, fearful of what was to come.
Glancing at the LEGO Batman clock on his nightstand, it was almost one. He heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and so he pulled the covers over his head. It felt safe in there, black and white sheets cocooning him in a blanket of comfort and warmth. If only the door hadn't opened.
Sheng Zhe was shaking when he heard his name called from thin lips. "Sheng Zhe... Sheng Zhe... come out you little brat." The old, tall man called his name, alcohol obviously on his breath. A tear escaped from the little boy's eye, falling onto the sheets, right before they were pulled back.
That's usually where it ended.
But today had been a bad day. The couple argued, both equally getting on each other's nerves. Sheng Zhe felt an absence of warmth around him as he fell asleep, which troubled his brain, knowing Yi Jie was mad enough that he didn't even want to touch him.
Yi Jie woke up around three am to a panting beside him. He assumed Sheng Zhe was just having a wet dream until he heard mutters of 'no' escape from the boy's lips.
Yi Jie sat up straight, putting a hand on a writhing back soaked with sweat, which only made Sheng Zhe speak louder.
"Sheng Zhe, Sheng Zhe, my love, my baby." He tried to coax Sheng Zhe back into reality, knowing it could cause problems if he just outright woke him up.
Sheng Zhe's eyes were still tightly closed, but his breathing was steadier. "Sheng Zhe, it's me. Yi Jie. I'm here." Slowly, he put a hand to Sheng Zhe's back, rubbing him gently. "Don't worry, I'm here. Just wake up." Sheng Zhe's eyes opened slowly, tears spilling out of them as soon as they opened.
Sheng Zhe's breath hitched, and he sat up, clinging tightly to Yi Jie. Tears flowed onto his shirt, creating a wet spot, as Yi Jie tried to calm him down.
"Don't worry. I'm here now. I won't let anyone hurt you ever again." He kissed the side of Sheng Zhe's sweaty neck. "I promise."
"I-I l-l-love yo-u." Sheng Zhe stuttered between broken breaths, crying like he was nine again. "I'm so scared."
"Don't be afraid." Yi Jie's voice was quiet and concentrated. "I'll protect you. Through anything." He kissed Sheng Zhe again. "I love you."
The only answer he needed was Sheng Zhe nuzzling closer into his neck.
