Ayanna Johnson
Last day of senior year. Last day of high school. Last day of seeing these people's faces I've memorized throughout the last four years.
"Hello freedom." I say to myself, my first step off my highschool campus in my cap and gown.
"I'm so proud of you, Yaya. You've accomplished so much and now you finally graduated. It all happened so fast." My dad said.
"Thanks dad, I couldn't have done it without you." I responded.
My best friend, Jarad, who attended my graduation was there too looking just as proud as my dad.
"Bruh ain't no way bruh," he said, attacking me with a hug. "You finally graduated. I'm happy for you, nig."
"Thank you, J. Thank you being there for me and being so solid. I probably wouldn't be on this earth if it weren't for you." I said in his ear so my dad wouldn't hear.
Though I'm aware that I was a good student, I never thought I would make it. I've been waiting for this time forever, and it seemed as if it's been a slow process, but in reality, time flew by so quickly.
Typically, I was introverted. I didn't have many friends at school, just a couple people I was acquaintances with. My only close friend was Jarad, who I met my freshman year in high school. He dropped out the year after, but we remained friends. Overall, I always preferred to stay to myself when it came to people.
"Let's go Ihop after. My treat." Jarad offers. I gasped looking at my dad for his permission.
"Go ahead." He waved me off.
"Yes!" I said, hugging my dad and kissing his cheek.
"Text me after y'all done." He said.
Jarad and I walked to his car, celebrating my achievement. I carefully took off my cap and gown revealing my adidas pants and my Iron Maiden shirt.
"Congrats bruh, I'm beyond happy for you." He repeated.
"I appreciate it man. Thanks again."
He smiled at me before saying, "look in the back."
I confusingly looked at the back seat which revealed a bunch of boxes and bags from various stores. I gasped and looked at him with a huge smile. He laughed at my reaction.
"That's all you man." He said.
"I swear on god I don't deserve you." I reached backward to grab a Victoria Secret bag but he caught my arm.
"Open them when you get home."
"Okay then."
"I have one last gift. It's not as special as everything else but you wanna be the first to hear what I just recorded?" He asked. My eyebrows rose.
"Are you kidding? Yes of course I do."
"Bet." He said hooking his phone up to the speaker while trying to drive at the same time. I instantly snatched his phone.
"Focus on the road. I got it. Damn." I told him. There's been multiple incidents where's he's almost killed us both doing stupid shit like trying to do something on his phone. I prefer to just help him out rather than take the chance of us dying.
He bursted into laughter at my reaction. "Well shit." He said in a muffled voice due to the blunt being in his mouth. He offered some for me and took it in and blew out the smoke.
"It's in my notes. It should be on the top titled 'Old Me.'" He said.
I typed his password '9999' clicking into his notes. I scrolled through various song lyrics before scrolling back up and clicking the note he told me to.
