----------------------------

This was just a wonderful day. And by wonderful, Michael meant horrible.

The coffee machine had broken at his house, and that morning he desperately needed a coffee. He did not sleep well that night, tossing and turning with his mind wandering. Then he lost his keys to his car, so he resorted to taking the bus. However, the bus stop was a few blocks from his house, so he had to walk the way there in a rush.

So, by the time he left the apartment, he was absolutely livid.

On his way to the bus stop, Michael passed a coffee shop. Glancing at his watch and determining he had enough time, he walked through the doors. And almost walked back out.

The line to the counter was long. It was packed inside the shop. The tables were full and it seemed that everyone in the entire goddamn town wanted to stop at this particular coffee shop.

But, Michael’s need for coffee that morning willed him to keep him calm and stay in line. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and clenched his jaw, pissed at this point, and 100% certain the world wanted to fuck with him.

Michael decided that he would get a coffee to go, since at this rate, he was going to be late for work. But as he approached the counter, his eye caught something. Or someone, to be exact.

Sitting alone at a table for two in the back of the shop, a man sat. He looked to be around Michael’s age, and had dirty blonde hair and matching stubble. He was scrolling through his phone while sitting at the table, a coffee sitting on the table in front of him.

The man was attractive. That was for sure. But it’s not like he’d be interested in Michael….Right?

Almost on cue, the man at the table looked up and locked eyes with Michael. That was when Michael had realized he was staring. His cheeks flushed as he looked away, instead focusing on the coffee counter.

When it was finally his turn, Michael ordered a regular coffee with cream. It was done within a few minutes, and Michael was prepared to leave. Then, on a whim, he looked over at the table with the man again. He was looking down at his phone again, sipping the coffee gingerly.

Fuck it, Michael thought, and began to make his way towards the table. It was the only one in the shop with a seat left.

“Hey,” Michael said when he got close enough to the table. The man looked up, smiling a bit at seeing him.

“Hello,” He said. Damn. He was British.

“Hey,” Michael said, then realizing he just repeated himself, continued, “Is this seat taken?”

“No, go ahead,” The man nodded, taking a sip from his coffee.

“I’m Michael, by the way,” Michael introduced himself as he took a seat at the table.

“Gavin,” The man replied. “Pleasure to meet you.”

Michael went to take a sip from his own coffee when he realized he really should’ve waited until it cooled down. He winced as the hot liquid burned his tongue, clapping a hand over his mouth and muttering a swear.

“Careful, there, love,” Gavin said, chuckling. “The coffee’s hot.”

Michael didn’t reply, blushing from both embarrassment and that Gavin called him ‘love’. While trying to cool his burning tongue, he glanced at the wristwatch he wore. Then, he muttered an even louder swear and stood up from the table, startling Gavin.
